This restaurant is the islands indisputable king when it comes to hot plates done local style. For decades now, the manangs under the blue tin roof have been serving the community their fresh baked goods and brown gravy soaked lunch plate specials.

Recently reviewed online at http://www.travel.NYTimes.com, this little cafe sitting on seventh street is a real crowd pleaser.

A typical hole-in-the-wall eatery, this place is well known by the locals. Formerly known as Tanigawa's, recently remodelled and under new management, this breakfast, brunch and lunch shack is just that, as it closes every day by 1 p.m.

Don't expect tablecloths or winelists, this is homecooking in it's natural form, hot plates and hot cakes served right off the greasy griddle.

Thurs-Tues 6:30am-1pm, Closed Wed

Restaurant owners Mark and Barb Zigmond are East Coast transplants, and their homestates carry over in the overall feeling of this New York style Deli & Bistro. It's open for lunch and dinner, and staffed with friendly and efficient workers.

The only place on the island that offers beer on tap, this a favorite stop for tourists, hotel workers and locals alike.

Mon-Fri 10am-2:30pm; Mon-Sat 5-8pm

After our trip into town for lunch, which somehow we missed. I was FAMISHED.
Waitress brought me bread and apoligized that the butter was frozen as they didn't serve bread until dinner. Right then I knew these are people who go out of their way to make you happy. and then there was the FOOD!

Salt and Pepper Chips, potato chip style and made to order were heaven. served with a maui onion dip I didn't think i'd want. LOL ended up asking for more.
Who knew that fish and chips could be this good? Mahi Mahi, deep fried on a bed of seasonsed skinny fries was just outstanding.
mahi mahi sandwich with ginger and wasabi...and a substitution of a ceaser salad in place of yet more of the salt and pepper chips was a nice touch at no charge.
We had heard the food was 'decent'. If this is only DECENT then i have NO idea what people are thinking!!
