    Dress Warmly for Haleakala!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I suggest bringing long pants and a sweatshirt or jacket for the top of Haleakala. You can always layer them over your shorts and t-shirt and take them off when you return to the base. It is very chilly and windy! If you don't want to pack bulky clothing for just this one place, then at least have a pair of pants and you can always wrap a beach towel around your shoulders!

Photo Equipment: Definitely bring a camera, preferably with a panoramic feature. The landscape doesn't even look like it belongs on planet Earth. Also, be sure to take photos as you ascend higher than the clouds - it is truly surreal!

Bring A Jacket, Long Pants, and a Beanie

by briantravelman Updated Jan 13, 2014

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I know, that's probably the LAST thing you expected to hear, but when you're 10,000 ft. above sea level, it can get really cold, even in Hawaii. I knew it would be cold, but didn't know how cold. I went up there in shorts, and a long shirt, thinking it would be enough, and it was below 30 degrees. It probably wouldn't have been so bad, except for the strong wind. It was the wind that made it so cold, so it’s good to bring a beanie.
Sometimes, it even snows up here in winter, so if you're planning to visit the summit, bring warm clothes. You will be fine in the lower elevations, but you will freeze on the summit, especially since you are exposed to the wind. Shorts and a t-shirt, not a good idea. I had soar ears and a soar back for days. I seriously thought I was gonna catch a cold. I couldn’t wait to get back down to warmer elevation.
