Parking in Lahaina
Favorite thing: The fact that it is bustling with activity and is a really cool, quaint harbor town.
Fondest memory: The boat ride out to go watch whales (see my picture), as we were riding out you can see the town of Lahaina on the land and behind it the gorgeous green mountains and then the rainbow!!

Low Crime Rate?
Favorite thing: I am not sure what the crime rate is in Lahaina but I can only assume that the bigger the police station, the higher the crime rate. With that said....I guess the crime rate in Lahaina is relatively low!
This could have something to do with the Aloha Spirit Law on my Oahu page.
get yourself a cup of coffee...
Favorite thing: get yourself a cup of coffee from the Bad Ass Coffee shop. Mmmmmmmmhhhhh... Then walk across the street and enjoy the view of the sea, with the old sailing ship Carthaginian in what was once Hawaii´s busiest harbor (whalers!).
smoox's General Tip
Fondest memory: Realizing how green Maui is from all those sugar cane fields.
There is a big mill between the two mountains - in season, its chimneys will blow out enormous amounts of smoke. No worries - it´s not an explosion, they are processing the sugar cane!

Favorite thing: The day after our trip to Hana it was a beautiful Hawaiian day. So, what better way to enjoy Hawaii then to play golf at the Kaanapali Course. Our wives took this photo of us from the condo we stayed at on the sixteen fairway. Our score?? Well we didn't qualify for the Senior Tour that plays a tournament here every year.

Favorite thing: For an all day trip take the road to Hana. This road has 58 one lane bridges and 617 blind curves. This is no autobahn. Beautiful yes, full of small beaches (a photo of a black sand beach previously posted) waterfall, and macadamin nut trees. well worth the trip but it was a cloudy, rainy day for us. Past the town of Hana is the Seven Scared Pools. I took this one photo and barely made it back to the car before a real downpour.

Favorite thing: Visit the Pioneer Inn. It a great place to have a drink or eat lunch. When I stayed there the rooms were very plain and not worth the money. Maybe things have changed and they have updated the rooms. The Inn dates back to the the days when Lahaina was a whaling port.

Favorite thing: Leave your 'Type A' on the plane. Don't be in a hurry. Take a deep breath and sense the jasmine and plumeria in the air. The ocean will still be there when you are ready for it to be there! On the west side of Maui, check out the rainbows in the mornings and watch the sunset in the evenings. Do the beaches and whatever else in between. Snorkel or SCUBA - watch the fish, but leave the reefs undisturbed. Turn your back to the ocean (makai) and look inland (mauka). There are still spectacular geologic formations, flora and fauna on this island. If you're here in the Winter, watch the whales!
Fondest memory: The sunsets! and one absolutely memorable sunrise in March, 2000. I was traveling from Napili to Kihei with my dad to canoe with the Kihei canoe club one morning as the rays of the sun were just beginning to split through a mountain pass above Lahaina and just south of the Pioneer Mill. Unfortunately I had no camera. The image was one of intensely vivid rays of the sun splitting at the base of the pass, filtering through a slight haze and spreading brilliantly across the blue sky. I literally expected to see Pele rising from the focal point! I have been by there several times since and never have seen anything close to a similar phenomenon.

Favorite thing: visit the town square and see the Banyon tree! From the central trunk and lateral branches, it has put out arial roots which have rooted and grown more trunks and branches, spreading an entire block. Reported to be over 100 years old, the tree is a sight to behold and a wonderful place to reflect.
Fondest memory: Early morning whale watching! And seeing a mom, calf and escort breaching repeatedly just off the side of our boat. Absolutely unforgetable.
Favorite thing: KIHEI
Fondest memory: Kehei(key-hay) is a nice little beach town about 30 miles south of Lahaina on the same side of the island. it's got a really nice beach and there's all kinds of stores to rent scuba and surf gear. Also, they have some great houses with lofts and kitchens for rent.(Sorry, I don't know the name). If you tell your travel agent you want to rent a house in Kehei they will know which ones I'm talking about.

Favorite thing: Stay on the leeward side of the island (i.e.Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kapalua, etc.). It is the drier side of the island so you can expect fewer tropical showers and warmer temperatures. Lahaina in Hawaiian means 'cruel sun'.
Fondest memory: Lounging on Kaanapali beach! There is a great snorkel/dive spot right off the beach (Black Rock). During the summer the beach can get a littel crowded, but certainly not uncomfortable. It's really a great beach for just laying around and swimming. Below you'll see Kaanapali Beach from Black Rock.
Favorite thing: Nothing makes a trip to Hawaii more beautiful than a Rainbow. We were fortunate to see many rainbows during our Hawaiin trip; the majority of them being in Maui.
Favorite thing: Having a group picture taken with some well trained parrots. They left no residue on your shoulders, clothing, etc.
Sugar Train Ride
Favorite thing: This is an interesting ride. Unfortunately we were dragged to the other end of the ride for the start of the trip. Therefore, we only took half of it.
