Do it yourself walking tour.
We just walked into any of the historical sites in Lahaina and picked up a map to do this walk. It could take you a few hours to do but its free (except to where you need to pay admission), there are many signs to let you know where you are at and what to expect. I found it interesting and informative. Lots of great information. It takes you back in time alittle bit. In my tips a included just a few places that we hit on this walking tour but there was so much to see. If you are in Lahaina at enjoy history then you have to do this walk at least once.
Historical walking tour: Baldwin Home
The Baldwin Home was built in 1834. It was the home of Reverend Dwight Baldwin. He was a missionary and a doctor. The house was a medical office, his home and the location of missionary activity.
The Baldwin family lived here from the mid 1830's to 1868.
In the 1960's the house was restored with original furniture and other antiques. It is a museum now that we can all enjoy. It looks like it was a beautiful house.
Historical walking tour:Wo Hing Society Temple
The Chinese were here before the whalers and missionaries. They have so much history here on the Hawaiian Islands. They built meeting halls or temples where their societies could get together. They have held on to their traditions and culture for generations. In 1909 the Chinese living in Lahaina formed the Wo Hing Society, a branch of the Chee Kung Tong, a fraternal society with chapters throughout the world. In 1912, using private donations, the society built a two-story temple on Front Street.
My kids I came in here to check it out. It was part of the Historical walking tour of Lahaina that we did. It was very interesting to see so much history and i think the kids enjoyed it too.
Historical walking tour:Pioneer Inn
This place looks pretty modern so I really didnt think there was anything historical about it but I saw the plaques. There are plaques in front of most places that are on the walking tour and it gives you alittle important info.
For example The Pioneer Inn was built in 1901. It was later expanded in 1965.
This was the only option for people who came to Maui to stay until the late 1950's. In my opinion that wasnt so bad. It was beach front.
