Super Markets, Maui
If you are staying in a condo and want to save a little bit of money, there are several places to buy groceries on Maui.
Safeway-I didn't go in but the others said this was overpriced in West Maui
Star Markets-close to our condo, biggest selection, cheaper than Safeway
Long's Drug Stores-a combination drug store/food market, we found chips, coffee and candy well priced here, we stopped in several different ones including the one in the Lahaina Cannery Mall.
KMart-close to the airport, the others said this was the cheapest place to buy groceries
We originally saw "Ah Fooks" on our honeymoon in 1993. We quickly took a picture and drove away. When we returned this past May 2004, we were determined to find "Ah Fooks" again. In 2007 we did find Ah Fooks but it had moved to a smaller building. Perhaps with all the big grocery stores moving in to the area there is too much competition. Nevertheless one can still find items moderately priced here in Ah Fooks.
What to buy: We bought some local fruit and local juices as well as bread and milk and locally made yogurts in flavors like Lychee, Guava, and pappya.
What to pay: Very reasonable pricing on most foods especially fruits and vegetables.
If you're staying in a condo in Kahana, Kaanapali or Lahani and you want to save on groceries go to the StarMarket in Kahana. It has the same or better selection as the Safeway in the Cannery but is much more reasonable...particularly on booze. Found it by accident on the next to last day of our trip but I'll remember it next year.
What to buy: Adult beverages, deli stuff and all the other staples. Meat didn't look bad either.
What to pay: about 10%-20% less than Safeway
Eating out every night in Maui can be a very expensive ordeal. So if possible, I would recommend that you find accommodations which include a kitchen. We did and ended up saving tons of money. One of the things which we did before leaving for Maui was to cut coupons and take them with us for use at the Safeway Grocery Store. I also brought along my club card and ended up saving more money.
What to buy: Food items like meat, vegetables, fruits, milk, soda, rice, condiments.
What to pay: It all depends....we ended up saving over $30.00 by using coupons and the club card.
