Maui Tourist Traps

  • Danger! Sugarcane Train can damage you...

I saw it myself. There was a murderous look in the eyes of the 13-year-old girl across the aisle from me. She kept spitting out statements dripping with sarcasm toward her parents that somehow only 13-year-old girls can master. "Ooh look, another abandoned truck!", "Gosh Mom, the back of that mall looks so pretty" and "Those golfers sure are having...

  • Road to Hana - is it just me?

In February we took the road to Hana and omg what a waste of an afternoon! Extremely frustrating to drive an average of 20-25 mph on switchback roads. It wasn't particularly scary and the jungle was lush but there was no water in the streams so no waterfalls. It was agonizing and tedious. Once we got to Hana we paid $29 for 2 ahi burgers(small), a...

  • Lighting of Black Rock at sunset

At the Sheraton Maui in Kaanapoli, every sunset, there is a unique celebration which involves islanders swimming to the black rock area, running up the rock path, and lighting a torch at the tip of the rock right at sunset. Then they proceed to dive off the rocks. Quite beautiful. For more info, sheraton-maui.com.

  • Hidden prices all over!

When you are entering a botanical garden or any other attraction, WATCH OUT! THere will be parking lots charging $5 to park there. DRIVE ON. You will most likely find a parking lot closer to the attraction and probably cheaper, too.

  • Sunset Sail?

"Sunset Sails" are available everywhere. If you picture a large sailboat, gliding seamlessly through the water as you cuddle up with your honey sipping champagne-you might be disappointed in this excursion. It is a catameran that takes you a couple of hundred yards from the shoreline and goes back and forth enjoying the same sunsets people are...

  • The shops in Lahaina

It seems like so many of the stores in Lahaina are very similar. The strip essentially goes:souvenir store, art gallery, jewellry store, souvenir store, art gallery, jewellry store and they pretty much all carry the same things.I was disappointed that I even wasted time going into each store hoping to find something different only to find the same...

  • Haleakala Bike Trips

Watching the sunrise on top of Haleakala Volcano is extremely beautiful, but I would recommend that you just rent a car and up go yourself instead of joining one of the bike companies. The only thing you are really paying for is the bike ride down, and it really is not too fun because it only takes about 30 min to ride down and there are a lot of...

  • Don't book till ya look

I knew that there was several things I wanted to do in Maui so I booked everything online before I left only to find even better deals on the same activities on almost every street corner. Save money, wait until you get there!

  • Luau SCHMUAU

Everyone told us to go to a luau. "they are sooooo cool" they said... "they are amazing" they said "the food is outstandin" they said...blah blah blah....I don't know, maybe they are for some poeple, I just didn't really enjoy myself, I felt like it was just something that ALL the resorts do to get 60-80 bucks out of the travellers. I didn't learn...

  • Luau's

Luaus are tourist traps in Hawaii, but if you've never gone you need to. You can read my comments in the general tips section. Don't eat the poi. Actually do eat if you never have. If you go to Oahu first, go to the Polynesian Cultural Center for the day. It includes the best Polynesian show on the islands.

  • Food prices

Whatever you do, if you're there for more than a day or two, get an apartment or condo with kitchen facilities. Food is really expensive there, it's better to just go to the grocery store, and eat out only a few times.(a luau being one of them, don't miss this!!)TRUST ME ON THIS!!!
