The ride is approximately 90 minutes. Lower deck is mostly enclosed, upper deck open. A naturalist was on board on our ride over. Lots of whales sitings and some dolphins. Our ride both ways was pretty smooth but heard it can be quite rough on the return due to winds picking up.

    Fly or Ferry
  • Tip Rating:
  • Only two ways to get to Molokai - fly or ferry.
There are 5 flights a day from Oahu via Aloha and Hawaiian and twice a day ferry service from Lahina, Maui.
I love the airport in Molokai - no long walks. Walk down the airplane's stairs and you're there!
The ferry from Lahina runs twice a day - early in the morning and about 6:00PM. Many residents of Molokai commute to Maui daily for work.

Hawaii has a new travel service for inter island travel, ferry boats ! We took the Molokai Princess on the 26 mile trip across the sea from Lahaina, Maui to Kaunakakai, Molokai. The trip takes an hour and a hour each way through very choppy waters. So if you get sea sick like me be sure to take Dramamine or as they do on Molokai suck on hard Ginger candy, an old Hawaiian natural alternative for preventing sea sickness. See the website below for schedules and prices.

    Cheapest airfare
  • Tip Rating:
  • Moloka'i Air Shuttle is the cheapest way to get to Moloka'i, half the price of other carriers ($80 pp round trip from HNL). They operate from the far side of the airport at Honolulu Int'l so you'll have to get the car rental people to take you over there on the shuttle. Other idiosyncracies: no website, no credit cards. I mailed them a personal check two weeks in advance. They operate ten seat twin prop aircraft, twenty minute flight.

A rental car is a must
On an island without taxis and public transport renting a car is indispensable, even though bicycles could come in handy, as well.
But even by car many parts of the islands, esp. the tropical north-east, are inaccessible, so in order to explore this region you have to hike or rent a boat.

    Rent a car a must!
Renting a car makes sense on Molokai since everything is so expansive and quite a ways to get to. There are no local bus, taxi or shuttle services. The Molokai airport is very small and the rental counters are visible in the baggage claim area. Budget and Dollar the big names in car rental there. Island Kine rental is in Kaunakakai town. Inquire if they will still come out to the airport to meet your flight and show you around.

    rent a car!
The only way to travel around Molokai is by car! Rent a car and drive around, it's pretty easy as there are only 3 main roads. Even I didn't get lost (which is amazing, trust me).
When you go to the East side of the island, wave to all the cars you pass, there won't be that many. The roads get very narrow there , so slow down and take care!

You need vehicle to get around molokai
We rented a 4-door car for our week and I must say, it is an absolute neccessity to truly experience the island. They are so many spots to 'check' out, but you really need a car or 4x4,insome cases. Its a bit expensive, but worth it, we rented thru Budget and it was unlimited mileage for 7 days, we put on 300 miles, in that time, which cost us $38.00 US for fuel and $217.00 US for rental... money well spent.
