The Reigning of Queen of Hawaiian Music

by Ric

Aunty Genoa Keawe has been performing for a half century and a consummate professional musician. Sadly this "leo o Hawai'i" (voice of Hawai'i) came to an end last year. Happily, the rest of the ensemble continues and have been joined by the heir apparent, Pomai, her granddaughter. The Genoa Keawe 'Ohana performs at the Marriot Waikiki Beach poolside overlooking Kalakaua Avenue on Thursdays from 5:30 pm to c. 9:30 pm. The MWB serves Hawaiian-style pupu (things to eat while drinking). Local people who like Hawaiian music often come by; other musicians and hula dancers are often called up from the audience. The drink and pupu prices are reasonable (drinks c. $4.00, pupu c. $6.00). No cover charge. Fairly informal; shorts, aloha shirt, slippers are all OK. Retro black and piercings other than earlobes will earn doubletakes.

Waikiki Beach: Stroll along the beach. It is safe at night!

by joiwatani

The Hawaiians are so happy when they established a Police Precint at Waikiki Beach! Do you know what that means to them? Safer for the local residents and the tourists to stroll and walk along the beach at night! (And, at day time, of course!). Just strolling along the beach and listening to one's self and the ocean waves is fun. Not that we are crazy, but sometimes, we know that we needed to listen to our inner selves! It's amazing how this thing will do to us! It re-energizes, refreshes us and get rid of the poisons inside us! Just a hang-loose shirt and shorts. Wear slippers.

The beach close to the Aloha Tower: Sunset walk

by joiwatani

Just walking and sitting on a park close to the Aloha Tower is just relaxing and fun. The sun set is beautiful. While waiting for a cruise ship to watch the 4th of July fireworks, we just walk around the block chatting. We went to the dock and watch the fishes. Comfortable aloha clothes- slippers, t-shirts and shorts.

Kalakua Avenue: Walk at the Kalakua Avenue

by joiwatani

The street life in Honolulu is very exciting nowadays unlike in the old days. It's now fun to go out at night just basically walking! There is so much to see! There are Jamaican drummers doing their beats, people dancing, children singing karaoke, people painting, a guy making balloons to sell and make different shapes of the balloons, statue people, etc. Plus, there is so much stores to window-shop!The walk is more fun this time and I didn't realize I walk the whole of Kalakua Avenue with my daughter. Good exercise after a big Hawaiian dinner! Walking shorts, slippers, t-shirts.

Germaine's Luau vs. Polynesian Cultural Center: Oahu: Luau Comparison

by diver-x

OK, so I've only been to 2 luaus ever. Doesn't make me an expert or anything, but I never let that stop me from giving my opinion. On our first trip to Hawaii, in 2001, we went to the luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center and were highly disappointed at the lack of alcohol due to the fact that the PCC is owned & operated by the Mormon church. The food was OK, about as well as can be expected for a casual affair for several hundred people. You got your shredded pork, your chicken, your poy, fruit and salads. . . The show after the dinner, however, was great! Really enjoyed that. It was classy and entertaining, funny and dramatic. Loved it! The drive out the the PCC was very nice, along lovely beaches and beautiful valleys. And of course, besides the luau, you have the PCC itself, a collection of interactivve exhibits and activites to introduce you to many of the different Polynesian...

Large Hotel Indoor/Outdoor Bars: Like Vegas, Honolulu Never Sleeps

by deecat

Allan and I walked from large hotel to large hotel to listen to live music, try the exotic drinks, and people watch. It's great fun and along the way, you meet new people, discover unusual drink combinations, and hear fantastic entertainment. My favorite drink turned out to be an iced drink called "CoCo Coffee" which was a speciality at one of the beachfront hotels at Waikiki Beach. At night, it's a little dressier than bathing suits and cover-ups (as you would wear in the daytime). Women should wear Capri Pants, or slacks, or summer sundress; men should wear slacks and a casual shirt. You may wear shorts, but they should not be cut-offs or short shorts.

Pipeline Cafe: Night Life

by blurryguy

Its a great place Pipeline Cafe...Music, dancing they even have an upstairs to eat and even throw darts. If you are lookin for a great night Pipeline is the place you want to be. 21 and older gets you in everynight but Friday, Friday is 18 and older...YEAH!! Guy most wear pants, collar shirts and shoes...no slippers. If you show up in anything less you won't be allowed in...not to sure about what the ladies have to wear cause I'm a guy, whatever I guess for the ladies.
