Hanauma Bay: snorkeling for the day
  • Tip Rating:
  • you can take a bus from close to waikiki to hanuma bay on thebus for $2. it takes about 1 hour on the bus to get there.but it is well worth it and thebus takes you right there.

when we got there, there was a line, but it was a holiday weekend so it was probably a bit busier than normal.

you pay $5 for an all day pass. a very fair price for being able to hang out there. it is beautiful!

you have to watch a video before they let you on the beach which talks about the conservation of hanauma bay. it is not too bad and it quite catchy with the cute songs and you learn about the history and what to expect.

the snorkeling was great! we saw great fish, very close! some people even saw sea turtles.

you can rent your own snorkeling equipment there or buy it at abc stores before like we did before we sent there.

a great day and to get out of waikiki/honolulu area!

  • Beautiful beach, and great snorkling/scuba diving along coral reef. You are sure to see hundreds of fish swimming along the reef. Cost $3 to get into park. Closed every Tuesday to give fish a break from visitors. One warning, placed is heavily populated and no food/drink is available along beach.

    Hanauma Bay: Hanauma Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just outside of Waikiki is Hanauma Bay. For the best snorkeling on Oahu, don't miss it.
Snorkeling and shore diving is great here! Or just lounging on the beach.

THis is where I snorkeled for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it! It's a fascinating and beautiful world underwater. Hanauma Bay Nature Park is one of the more popular recreational swimming, snorkeling and picnicing areas on O`ahu. The bay itself is legally designated as a State Underwater Park and Conservation District. It is home to approximately 420 species of tropical reef fish and is fully manned with City and County Lifeguards.
The bay is the result of the ocean's breaching and incursion into two volcano craters. This beautiful place is ideal if you are a new or experienced SCUBA diver or snorkeler; or just for swimming. There are hiking trails with very pretty vistas and the park areas have good picnicing sites.

It closes down all day on Tuesdays; all other days it's open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is a US$3.00 entrance fee if you are a non-resident; free entrance - if you can show valid local identification. The park can comfortably accommodate about 2,000 people at any one time. There is a US$1.00 per car parking fee. You can call +1 (808) 396-4229 for other information about the park twenty-four hours per day.

Efforts to conserve the park's resources have resulted in reduced conjestion and a cleaner beach. These efforts even earned recognition and three awards from British Airways in 1998, including its "Tourism for Tomorrow" Award.

    Hanauma Bay: Hanauma Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes, you're unlikely to ever have the place to yourself - millions of tourists pass through this place - but the low entry fee makes this place worth checking out. Very scenic area, lots of photo ops! Snorkel with friendly fish (not allowed to feed them anymore though) then don't forget to do the two walks. The 'toilet bowl' is definitely worth a visit - FUN!

Hanauma Bay: Hanama Bay is only for a...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hanama Bay is only for a beginning snorkelers who want to say they have experienced it. You have to take a bus, rent equipment and food, and then you are free to snorkel along the bay. It tends to be very crowded, but still lots of fun. Becareful of the coral reef and believe it or not the fish. They will take your fish food right out of your hand and even bite you if you are not careful.
