This was the funnest experience we had. The weather was not great and there were quite a few waves on Kailua Beach, but we were determined to kayak thankfully. Driving up to Kailua Beach is really fun too. Part of the highway goes along the shore and it is breathtaking a lot of the time. We rented our kayak from Hawaiian Watersports ($45/half day for a double kayak)
It was sooooo much fun. We kayaked to an island off shore which was a bird sanctuary, but we saw no birds and then we kayaked around catching waves and it was SO MUCH FUN. Hawaiian Watersports will deliver the kayak right on the beach where you can hop in it and ride the waves.
