Luau at Royal Hawaiian by LoriPori For our daughter's reception, we attended the LUAU at the Royal Hawaiian. As we (all 17 of us) waited in the lobby, we were given our beautiful purple leis and then we were shown to our reserved table. There were two other wedding receptions there that night which was very nice. We had a sumptuous all-you-can-eat feast featuring many Hawaiian dishes like shredded BBQ pork and poi. Also drinks including alcoholic beverage and exotic cocktails were also included. After the meal, we were entertained with Polynesian dance, song and music. The young Samoan men put on an awesome fire dance. Later dances were dedicated to the newlyweds who slow-danced against the backdrop of Diamond Head and a beautiful Hawaiian sunset. Truly magical. The Hawaiian word "Lu'au" (pronounce loo-ow) means 'a feast'. A luau is not necessarily a public affair on the luau grounds of a Hotel. For the people who live in the Hawaiian Islands a luau is a gathering of family and friends to enjoy good food, good company, and good times! There may or may not be spontaneous ukulele or guitar playing by uncle, with everyone singing, and auntie dancing the hula. Luaus are a fun way to enjoy quality family time and are especially held for occasions like birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, bridal & baby showers, rehearsal dinners, and weddings. It may feature food, such as poi, kalua pig, poke, lomi salmon, opihi, haupia, and beer; and entertainment, such as Hawaiian music and hula. Among people from Hawaii, the concepts of "luau" and "party" are often blended, resulting in graduation luaus, wedding luaus, and birthday luaus. And there is Drinking Galore!, Makes me Tipsy! dancing at P.C.C. by Redlats I have read mixed reviews on whether the P.C.C. is a tourist trap or a must see activity. We went. Basically, visiting the P.C.C. is an all day thing. You first go and visit some of the seven pavillions, learn about the peoples that originated Hawaii (people from Tongo, New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, etc.). There are shows at various times at the pavillions. Don't miss the Samoan - he had us in stiches with his presentation. The entrance includes a meal - either an American buffet, or a Polynesian luau. The evening ends with a grand show featuring dancing etc. from all seven regions, and cumulating in a fire-swallowing dance. We enjoyed the day. As the P.C.C. is on the other side of the island from Honolulu, tickets are available that include bus transportation to and from Honolulu. In 2003, one adult ticket ranges from $70 to $190 depending on what meal, etc. you choose. Leave a Comment

by baileyniko My friend and I booked this luau online prior to the trip, which was simple. We got picked up and dropped off right from the hotel, which was convenient because we didn't want to navigate dark and winding roads along the coastline back to Waikiki (plus we drank Mai Tais and Lava Flows all night). This luau has great activities and entertainment - you arrive, receive a lei and a drink, and you can partake in a variety of fun things before dinner. We made our own orchid leis and anklets, played "island bowling", and took a fun but too short paddle on an outrigger (with a handsome male guide!). The imu ceremony was pretty typical - the only problem was it was dusk and the lighting around the area was poor so photos didn't come out so great. The meal was just average, for me the best items were the salad with lomi lomi salmon on top, the purple (taro) rolls, and the coconut cake. The pork was very salty, and the fish and rice were bland. We opted for the sit down package, and we wished we just saved our money and went with the buffet so we could have loaded up on more salad and rolls and cake and left everything else! The show was very nice, though by the end you are sick of hearing the entertainers call you "Cousin"...enough already! The hula dancers - male and female - are definitely eye candy! The fire dancer was great! Leave a Comment

So, our first time in Hawaii, you gotta do a luau! I hear they can be pretty pricey! Fortunately for us, we happen to join a huge group in Waikiki for a conference and I think the price was pretty good. Anyway, we went to Paradise Cove. The location is great! The dancing show was great! The food, so-so. They pack in a lot of activities you can participate in prior to dinner and it was well organized. The entire area is sandy or with dirt, so you'll get your toes dirty. The sunset was absolutely beautiful. Phone: 800.775.2683Directions: From Waikiki, take H1 west and continue on the 93. Exit at Ko Olina to Aliinui Drive and continue past the guard shack. Parking lot on the right.Website: www.paradisecovehawaii.com Other Contact: 808.842.5911

Watching the dancers. by Jetgirly At Germaine's Luau, the party centers around the food! Watch them prepare that roast pig, eat the roast pig, then sit back drinking mai tais while they put on a traiditonal Hawaiian dance. Watching them prepare the pig was gross for me (I can't imagine being a vegetarian), and I was sure I could taste sand in my food when I ate dinner that night! On the plus side, the bartenders were so distracted flirting with customers that they served my sixteen-year-old friends and I alcohol! Score one for the kids! The evening ends with a stage show, including Samoan, Tahitian and Hawaiian dances, plus chances for the audience to embarass themselves (males dress up in grass skirts, etc). They also form two big lines of men and women, and you go down the line kissing everyone on the cheek. I passed on that one, thanks. Part of the fun at Germaine's really is arriving on the big tour busses though, because on your way out of the city they teach you silly Hawaiian songs and get everyone involved in games. by d6676 This was surely a tourist trap. However, it was definitely worth it because the entertainers were wonderful people. Leave a Comment

by BellaMora If you are single, you've got to get to Germaine's Luau. The Blue Hawaii's and Mai Tai's were unforgetable. Its also a romantic spot if you arent single. This was a very sensual luau. I think anyone would love it! Leave a Comment

hula dancer by slabeaume At least for all first time visitors---go to a luau. Some people really talk up the Polynesian Cultural Center. We didn't make it there, but we did go to and really enjoy Germaine's Luau. We went here with a tour. The driver and guide made the ride fun with sing-a-longs and stories. Once we got there, there was someone to greet us and give us a shell leie, then take our picture (which they offered to sell to you on the bus ride back to WAikiki). There was about 30 minutes or so of free time then to wonder around before the ceremony of the luau started. Germaine's luau is an American-Hawaiian buffet. It begins with an interesting ceremonial unearthing of the roasted pig and honoring of the ancient Gods. THen, the pork was added to the buffet and everyone helped themselves. Included in the buffet is: the Kalua Pig (Roasted Pig), Poi (Taro Potato), Haupia (Coconut Pudding), Chicken Long Rice, Lomilomi Salmon, Fresh Pineapple, Island Fish, Rice, Vanilla Coconut Cake, Teriyaki Beef, Pineapple, Coleslaw, Chocolate Cake, Fried Chicken, Three Bean Salad, Tossed Green Salad, and Dinner Rolls. I enjoyed trying the Hawaiian foods. The roasted pig was very good. The poi---well, ... . But there was enough other food that I found plenty that I liked. The highlight of the evening was watching and learning about the dances of the Pacific. The dances and costumes of the Hawaii, Samoa, and Tahiti dances were beautiful. Germaine's Luau dancers were outstanding. They also put a lot of humor in the show by drawing people from the audience up to dance. The only real disappointment to me was that it was advertised as being right on the beach. I was expecting to be able to sit on the beach, but the beach was roped off. But it was still an evening of enjoyment. Leave a Comment Directions: Approximate travel time from Waikiki is 30-45 Minutes to the other side of Honolulu.
