 | Honolulu Tourist Traps | Tips 1 - 10 of 68 | | | | | | Much Over-priced! Shop around: Maui Divers of Hawaii | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Following the Submarine trip you are invited to get on the FREE bus to Maui Divers of Hawaii shop, 1520 Liona Street, Honolulu Hawaii 96814 USA phone 808 946 7979. You are ushered into a very plush set-up, offered juice or champagne, sat in front of a video and then taken on a tour of how they harvest and process the black, pink, red and very rare gold coral into jewellery. Then you are taken to the "shop" where you are subjected to varying intensities of sales pitch and technique to buy the jewellery. A lot of this is VERY expensive and I am not at all sure that it meets the International CITES regulations for endangered species.....
Drink the free champagne, try the mystery Treasure Chest Box, accept the free chocolates and enjoy the skill and techniques of the workshop, but think very carefully about if you REALLY want that dazzling piece of jewellery.... personally, I don't find coral attractive but was curious to see this "gold" coral which everyone raved about. It wasn't worth it! Leave a Comment

 | | | | Waikiki: Waikiki... The infamous tourist trap! | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Well, as anywhere in this world, there is always a tourist trap! Hawaii is no exception when it comes to "Waikiki". But, it's where the father, and the legend of surfing "Duke Kahanamoku" loved to be, "Waikiki Beach" to be exact. Depending on the fluctuation of tourism, the area can get pretty chaotic, sometimes it can feel like your in Japan walking through the crowded streets of tokyo, hmm.. Maybe I am exaggerating a bit.. lol But it can get pretty crowded at times..There are also sometimes when the place can be a ghost town, and you swore you saw a tumbleweed rolling across the street.. The stores and shops are extrememly overpriced, as well as the fast food restaurants. Your better off going to another town, the price gets lower.. Waikiki can get pretty monotnous if you won't get out of the trap and explore.. Do what the locals do. You will find that your experience there would be alot more interesting... I am not at all saying that Waikiki is nothing to look at, because the sunsets in Waikiki are amazing... Nothing like sitting on the sand watching the beautiful sun, set right before your eyes....
Go ahead and explore the whole island. Don't waste your coveted days in Waikiki. Go to places like The North Shore, it has a bohemian atmosphere about it. You will see alot of surfers, and alot of the "Hippyish 70's " lifestyle going on there. It is a very calm and relaxed environment. There are also alot of great places to eat there, local cuisine as well as a mixed melody of cultural foods.. They're are old lunch wagons artistically made to bring a smile to your face. Don't let that fool you.. The food is awesome! My mouth is watering already... The look of these restaurants may look old and unappealing to your eyes at first ,but inside is where good eats happen...
Get on a dinner cruise... If you aren't the seasick type. It is so romantic.. If you are into water sports, or any type of water activity available it is here in Hawaii... Go to a local travel agency and see what they have to offer and start making arrangments to have fun! If you are into the the pastimes, and historical places, visit "Pearl Harbor" and walk thru the "USS BowFin". Leave a Comment

 | | | | International Market Place: Waikiki, the biggest tourist trap in Honolulu | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Waikiki is the biggest tourist trap in all of Hawaii, but that's not to say you must stay away! This is how Hawaii makes money! Come, spend some money in Waikiki, but for a totally exhilerating experience, visit beyond Waikiki, and get to know the rest of the island. There are many ripoffs here, but being a local, in my opinion, International Market Place deserves mention here. You can find some really good deals here, honestly, but to me it's just a bunch of venders selling cheap stuff at sometimes over inflated prices. But hey, someone's got to put bread and butter on their dinner table, and you can find bargains here too.
You will definitely find some really neat stuff here that you won't find at your local Wal Mart, so go ahead and take a peek inside ... beware, it's crowded and larger than you imagine. 2330 Kalakaua AVE, Waikiki
