Much Over-priced! Shop around: Pearl in The Oyster
  • Tip Rating:
  • A quality pearl is guaranteed...... you pay $20 to "find" a pearl in the oyster.... the poor oyster is subjected to having a pre-drilled(!) pearl shoved into it's nether regions and is kept for you to open and "find" the pearl.......

High price to pay for a pearl which you then lose because you can't afford to pay for the gold mounting.....

Forget it, but enjoy all the other sights and sounds in The Galleria while you play mind games with the shop owners... and watch the other tourists fall for it.

Eh, it is all part and parcel of Hawaii.....go, but don't buy!

Much Over-priced! Shop around: Maui Divers of Hawaii
  • Tip Rating:
  • Following the Submarine trip you are invited to get on the FREE bus to Maui Divers of Hawaii shop, 1520 Liona Street, Honolulu Hawaii 96814 USA phone 808 946 7979.

You are ushered into a very plush set-up, offered juice or champagne, sat in front of a video and then taken on a tour of how they harvest and process the black, pink, red and very rare gold coral into jewellery.

Then you are taken to the "shop" where you are subjected to varying intensities of sales pitch and technique to buy the jewellery. A lot of this is VERY expensive and I am not at all sure that it meets the International CITES regulations for endangered species.....

Drink the free champagne, try the mystery Treasure Chest Box, accept the free chocolates and enjoy the skill and techniques of the workshop, but think very carefully about if you REALLY want that dazzling piece of jewellery.... personally, I don't find coral attractive but was curious to see this "gold" coral which everyone raved about. It wasn't worth it!

Waikiki: Waikiki... The infamous tourist trap!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Well, as anywhere in this world, there is always a tourist trap! Hawaii is no exception when it comes to "Waikiki". But, it's where the father, and the legend of surfing "Duke Kahanamoku" loved to be, "Waikiki Beach" to be exact.

Depending on the fluctuation of tourism, the area can get pretty chaotic, sometimes it can feel like your in Japan walking through the crowded streets of tokyo, hmm.. Maybe I am exaggerating a bit.. lol But it can get pretty crowded at times..There are also sometimes when the place can be a ghost town, and you swore you saw a tumbleweed rolling across the street..

The stores and shops are extrememly overpriced, as well as the fast food restaurants. Your better off going to another town, the price gets lower..

Waikiki can get pretty monotnous if you won't get out of the trap and explore.. Do what the locals do. You will find that your experience there would be alot more interesting...

I am not at all saying that Waikiki is nothing to look at, because the sunsets in Waikiki are amazing... Nothing like sitting on the sand watching the beautiful sun, set right before your eyes....

Go ahead and explore the whole island. Don't waste your coveted days in Waikiki.

Go to places like The North Shore, it has a bohemian atmosphere about it. You will see alot of surfers, and alot of the "Hippyish 70's " lifestyle going on there. It is a very calm and relaxed environment. There are also alot of great places to eat there, local cuisine as well
as a mixed melody of cultural foods.. They're are old lunch wagons artistically made to bring a smile to your face. Don't let that fool you.. The food is awesome! My mouth is watering already... The look of these restaurants may look old and unappealing to your eyes at first ,but inside is where good eats happen...

Get on a dinner cruise... If you aren't the seasick type. It is so romantic.. If you are into water sports, or any type of water activity available it is here in Hawaii... Go to a local travel agency and see what they have to offer and start making arrangments to have fun!

If you are into the the pastimes, and historical places, visit "Pearl Harbor" and walk thru the "USS BowFin".

International Market Place: Waikiki, the biggest tourist trap in Honolulu
  • Tip Rating:
  • Trap #1, Int'l Market Place - Honolulu
    Trap #1, Int'l Market Place

Waikiki is the biggest tourist trap in all of Hawaii, but that's not to say you must stay away! This is how Hawaii makes money! Come, spend some money in Waikiki, but for a totally exhilerating experience, visit beyond Waikiki, and get to know the rest of the island. There are many ripoffs here, but being a local, in my opinion, International Market Place deserves mention here. You can find some really good deals here, honestly, but to me it's just a bunch of venders selling cheap stuff at sometimes over inflated prices. But hey, someone's got to put bread and butter on their dinner table, and you can find bargains here too.

You will definitely find some really neat stuff here that you won't find at your local Wal Mart, so go ahead and take a peek inside ... beware, it's crowded and larger than you imagine.

PCC & other Luau's: Polynesian Cultural Center
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is a theme park focusing on the culture and traditions of the Polynesian islands. It breaks my heart to say that it's a waste of time, since we ended up having a great time there, after rapidly becoming friends with the dancers who worked at the place. They loved us (see picture). This place is only good for those who stop to watch the parades at Disney World.

Taxi-cabs, Shuttles & Trollies: Once you arrive at airport,...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Once you arrive at airport, with bags in hand, you have to figure a way to get to you destination. Taking a cab or shuttle can easily cost over $50 for the ride. Look around the airport, there are free books they give to tourists with coupons for many attractions. In there you can find coupons to call shuttles to take you to your hotel for only $5-7 a person.

Free Breakfast deals: The Free Breakfasts
  • Tip Rating:
  • One trap is the Free Breakfasts offered by tour companies. Because we were first-timers, we went, even though I read it was a tourist trap. It boils down to - you get what you pay for. The free breakfast was terrible. Cold powered egg, frozen reheated hash browns, sausages that looked like little p**ps.

However the tourguide's presentation was interesting. They had lists of all the tours (full price of course), and explained what each one is. He did a good job of introducing Hawaii to us.
At our Breakfast/Tour Promotion, we bought a tour package which included a hike in the rainforest, boogie boarding, and snorkeling. That's also where we visited Pali Lookout.

Taxi-cabs, Shuttles & Trollies: Tourist trollies
  • Tip Rating:
  • The other thing that is a tourist trap is the many trolleys. I think I saw Blue, Green and even Rainbow trolleys circulating through Waikiki. We got on one (was free from our breakfast). It was worth what we paid for it. Takes a long time to get anywhere, the bus stops were unclear, and if you were to actually pay for the ride, it was $10 per person per day. Don't bother with the trolleys.

The other associated trap was Hilo Hatties. Somehow the trolleys include Hilo Hattie in their list of stops. Hilo Hattie may be home-grown Hawaiian, but it is an expensive store to buy your souvenirs.

Take The Bus - local transit.

    More pics of Honolulu
  • Tip Rating:
  • This isn't a page to say what is wrong but just put a few more pics in !!!!

Tourtraps are only when we don't want to see it coming. And then we fall into something that might not be what we thought at first.

A day at the beach or shopping mall really doesn't have to be a tourist trap.

Much Over-priced! Shop around: Check on Prices..
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do watch what you are being charged at the market stalls, I enquired about prices for 'Novelty Car Number Plates', was told $6.95 by a salesgirl, when I came back a little while later to buy some, I was being charged $10 each, by another salesman. Since I bought 10 of them, the difference did matter to me, ;-)

I just insisted on the first agreed price, and was given it..

Look elsewhere... just don't let them take you for more than agreed upon.

This can happen anywhere.. and often does.
