One trap is the Free Breakfasts offered by tour companies. Because we were first-timers, we went, even though I read it was a tourist trap. It boils down to - you get what you pay for. The free breakfast was terrible. Cold powered egg, frozen reheated hash browns, sausages that looked like little p**ps.
However the tourguide's presentation was interesting. They had lists of all the tours (full price of course), and explained what each one is. He did a good job of introducing Hawaii to us.
At our Breakfast/Tour Promotion, we bought a tour package which included a hike in the rainforest, boogie boarding, and snorkeling. That's also where we visited Pali Lookout.
If you book through a travel agent, you may have a 'welcome' breakfast the day after you arrive. After this breakfast, they will take you shopping. One of the places they take you is Maui Divers. Beware: they do this 'pearl diving' thing where you get an oyster and if there is a pearl in it, you get to keep the pearl. The problem is, they then try their best to get you to buy a setting for your pearl. Kind of high pressure sales tactics.
Most people that travel to Hawaii are all part of Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays. At the start of your trip they have a complimentary breakfast that you attend to find out all the information you need regarding trips, tours, and activities on all the islands. They have great vouchers you can use that will save you lots of money on all these tours. If you have never been to Hawaii before then you should attend this meeting to learn about what each island has to offer and decide what tours to go on. Not only will you get a free breakfast but you will also save lots of money. However if you have been to Hawaii before then these meetings are a WASTE of time. You can get the same information at your hotel. If you are a first time visitor and don't care about the $50 voucher then skip the meeting too. Like I said before you can get the same info and sign up for the tours at your hotel.
