    Dogs Surfing

by AKtravelers Updated Oct 27, 2009
Blaze watches Boomer launch his surfing career

We have seen it more than once: people taking their dogs down to Kailua or Lanikai Beach and letting them surf as they (the people) play in the waves. Usually, the dogs look like they'd rather be lazing on the couch watching Oprah, but they're enjoying themselves because they're with their human partners and that's all that matters.
...Unfortunately, I've never had a camera when we've been at the beach and witnessed this spectacle, so we'll have to give you the next best thing: Boomer, the Italian greyhound, taking his first boogie board ride around our pool. Maybe, just maybe, we'll have a picture of him in Kailua Bay soon!
By the way, Kailua Beach is one of the many beaches on Oahu on which dogs are allowed. Lanikai Beach is another, and both are among the best beaches in the USA.

    Overdoing It On Christmas

Going all out with Xmas lights in Kaneohe, Hawaii

Maybe it's because we have no snow in Hawaii. Maybe it's because we're afraid Santa will find himself over-dressed when he gets here. But whatever the reason, people on the Windward side of Oahu seem to really go all-out in decorating their houses for Christmas. There are even several streets where it appears that Christmas tradition demands that they try to out compete the neighbors decoratively. One such street is Nomoku Street in Kaneohe, right near my gym, but I've heard that another in the Ahimanu neighborhood is even gaudier. In kailua, the Olomana people enforce decorations through the neighborhood commitee. If you're on the Windward side around Christmas time, I recommend a drive to Kaneohe to see the show!

    Kailua is dog-friendly

Kailua is one of the most dog-friendly places we have ever lived. Dogs are allowed on all the beaches, and especially in the evening you can meet many of the resident dog owners taking their pooches for strolls along the crescent of sand fronting Kailua Bay. Most of the people are concientious about ensuring good behaviour on the part of their canine companions, as no one wants to lose this privelege. Dogs are allowed to eat outside on the patios of Baci's and Kawapalai Cafe. Lucy's used to forbid Carmen to dine with me there, but as their business dropped due to the Bush Economic Collapse in 2008, even they started to allow some dogs. Additionally, you'll see lots of people walking their dogs downtown, taking their dogs for coffee at Starbucks.
