    Observe the wild chickens :)

There are wild chickens all over the place and they can be quite interesting to look at. Its seems no two are the same color. The easiest way to find wild chickens is to drive the rural roads near the mountains and away from houses and people. Go slowly and look near the side of the road. I've noticed wild chickens near Maunawili and the Nuuanu lookout.

Apparently the chickens are without sufficient natural predators, hence the large population. One time I even saw a chicken roaming the Safeway parking lot in Kailua (see the attached pic).

    Tour a Ukulele Factory

by Rixie Updated Sep 19, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Kanile'a Ukulele is owned by husband-and-wife team Joe and Kristen Souza, both of whom were born and raised in Kailua. Joe is a master luthier, and their small ukulele factory produces custom-made, hand-crafted ukuleles.

These are not ordinary beginner ukuleles but professional level instruments that are pieces of art. They are designed to be heirlooms, handed down from generation to generation.

Kanile'a means joyful sound in Hawaiian. Kanile'a's goal is "to spread aloha all over the world through music," and the staff there is willing to show you how they turn raw wood into beautiful ukuleles. They are open Monday through Friday - call in advance to arrange a tour.

46-216 Kahuhipa Street, #3, Kane’ohe, Hawaii 96744, about 10 minutes' drive from Kailua.

    Giovanni's Shrimp Shack

This "shack" is actually a truck that serves extremely yummy garlic shrimp with rice. It's obviously popular, as it is covered with messages from previous patrons. They also serve delicious fresh fruit smoothies. It is off the right side of the H3 highway as you near the north shore.
