The beaches here are gorgeous and not as extremely crouded as Honolulu. Kite Surfing, now a popular sport worldwide, originated in Kailua. The windy nature of the shores are perfect for this activity. Learning is a bit difficult...taking a lesson might be a good idea. If you can get over the frustration of falling and having to reset your kite each time when you first try it, you can do some amazing things on the waves (jumps etc.) when you get the hang of it.

Rent a Sea Kayak
There are a couple of islands off the coast of Kailua called the Mokalua Isles. You can rent a one- or two-person sea kayak right by the beach. It takes quite a while to get out to the islands, but the journey is so beautiful (and good excercise). We saw many sea turtles on the way. Once you get to the islands, you can take a break, sunbathe, eat lunch, etc. until you are ready to head back to shore. It was a very rewarding adventure.

Road side fruit stands!
There were several fruit and coconut juice stands on the Kamehameha Hwy between North Shore and Kaneohe. We had fresh pineapple and coconut juice, excellent!
Kailua Beach Park
Excellent place to spend the day. Not crowded, clean restrooms, showers, shade, nice grassy area for picnic and some picnic tables.
It's got to be quality if Oprah recommends it. A twist on the typical smoothie-place. I recommend acai drinks to wash down the poke.
The World-Class Waikiki Beach
Waikiki Beach is a great place to watch a sunset as you enjoy a nice meal or Tiki drink. It's also amazing how close it is to the most modern amenities and shopping areas.
