Puapua Ukulele and Bob's Ukuleles: Buying a Ukulele

by fishandchips Updated Sep 15, 2012

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Puapua and Bob's are separate stores located on & near Kakakaua Rd respectively.

Puapua has a very nice range including Martin & Kala plus Hawaiian made Ukes such as Kelii and Valley Made. They are on Kalakaua just before the road becomes beach front.

Bob's is a more spartan affair located upstairs in the Royal Hawaiian shopping center. He also has a great range of locally made Ukes.

What to buy: Expect to pay from $380 for a Soprano and $580 for a Concert and Tenor Hawaiian made Uke. Other brans can be bought for less though they are often made in China (eg kala) so not of the same quality and don't sound as good.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Right next to the International Market Place is Duke´s Market Place. It´s almost the same as International Market Place with one small difference, there is no price tags so here you must bargain.

Remember to smile and be nice when you bargain don´t lose your temper.

Duke´s Lane is right besides International Market, between Kalakaua Avenue and Kuhio Avenue.

    What to buy: Souvenirs, clothes.

You can find the ABC STORES in practicaly every corner of Waikiki. In the ABC STORES you can find everything that a tourist needs, such as souvenirs, drugs, Hawaii fashion, sunlotion, everything for the beach, Hawaiian plants and much much more.

The ABC STORES are like a small department store adapted for tourists and with reasonable prices. On your tripp to Hawaii you will stop by a ABC STORE atleast 5 times.

The first ABC STORE was opened on Waikiki beach in 1964, the owners choosed the name ABC because the tourist would find it easy to remember. There are 37 ABC STORES on the Island of Oahu (most of them are in the Waikiki area).

  • ABC Stores: A store you can't do without!

by headkaes Written Nov 13, 2007

"All Blocks Covered" is the joke in Waikiki when referring to ABC stores, and it fits... literally. These stores are everywhere in Waikiki, and they stock just about anything a visitor to the island might need during their stay. Basically they are the KwikiMarts of the island. If you need sunscreen, medicine, snacks, etc. check here first.

What to buy: have a lot of souvenirs to buy for friends and coworkers? This is your place! There are tons of Hawaiian themed items to choose from at rock bottom prices, from t-shirts to tikis (I have one on my computer right now), and chocolates to ukuleles, you are almost guaranteed to find something for everybody.

What to pay: expect to pay anywhere from 99 cents to $20.00. When I was there they offered a free gift if you spent $100 throughout the duration of your stay. I never came close.

    ABC Stores: ABC = Everywhere

by tigerjapan Written Nov 3, 2007

ABC Stores are on just about every corner. They sell a variety of things and sometimes the prices aren't that bad. Great for getting a beach towel if you forgot yours (like me) and for picking up a bottle of water to take to the beach with you.

Of course a lot of stuff is over-priced, but they are super handy and I was grateful for them each day!

What to buy: They sell so much, you can get just about anything you'll need.

    ABC Stores: Reasonable and convinient

by OlenaKyiv Written Apr 1, 2007

I don’t know what we would do without ABC stores. First of all, you will see them almost on every street. Secondly, you can buy there food, alcohol, T-shirts, souvenirs, make-up, and other things you forgot to bring with you or that didn’t fit into your luggage. I am very surprised how all that stuff they sell fits in those small rooms. Why did I like it? Because the prices are reasonable, and the food is that one to which we got used, so thanks to ABC Stores we saved some money, buying food on our own instead of spending them in expensive restaurants.
