glass art in Boise airport by JetlagCity Amtrak no longer has trains going to Boise, so driving or flying here is your best bet. The Boise airport was recently remodeled and expanded and is rather nice now, although still relatively small. It no longer looks terribly outdated, and there’s more than one place to grab a bite to eat, although they’re mostly fast food places. If you're flying here in the winter, like around Christmas time, there could be significant delays due to fog. Not always, but it's happened to me more than once! There are numerous regional airlines and several major ones that fly here, as follows: Alaska Airlines Horizon Air United Northwest Southwest Delta America West Frontier Sky West Continental Express Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Boise Airport by ATXtraveler Of all the airports that I have been to, Boise ranks up there on the list of unorganized ones! The ticket personnel at most of the gates were not very helpful, but security was easy and simple. There also were not alot choices of airlines to choose from: Southwest, United, America West, Alaska were the main ones. Leave a Comment

Horizon Airlines Q400 by edss I purchased my flight with Continental Airlines and on my way home from Boise the first leg was actually a Horizon Airlines flight. It was my first time on a prop plane. I was a bit nervous as I have heard stories of how turbulent the flights on prop planes are and how noisy they are. Well I can tell you that it was one of the smoothest flights I have had yet and it was not any nosier than a jet plane. The plane we were on was a Q400 which had about 80 seats. The whole experience with Horizon airlines was pleasant from checking in at BOI to the actual flight. The airport seems to run efficiently and it is quite nice. Once in the air Horizon served complimentary wines from the northwest and microbrewed beer. The flight attendants were very pleasant and provided excellent service. I definitely suggest trying to fly Horizon/Alaskan because I think you will be more satisfied than with any of the other airlines.

Bicycles Parked at an 8th Street Java House by atufft, 1 more photos Boise has an excellent system of trails, dedicated lanes, and routes for cyclists. Downtown is now extremely popular for families to come on their fat tired cruisers, as well as traditional mountain and road bicycles. I rode a very nice dedicated bicycle path which goes along Federal Blvd and an irrigation canal to the Train Depot. But, the best path is the Boise Greenbelt that follows the river for some 9 miles. See the link below for more details on this, as I only saw parts of the path in the city. I would like to see this path extended from 9 to at least 30 miles along the river to provide fit cyclists a really full workout. Leave a Comment

by crazyk Boise has about two freeways here, the I-84 freeway, and the 1-84 that goes downtown from the split before the Franklin exit. This "split", is famously known here as the flying wye. The 84 freeway is the main freeway that goes around boise toward Salt Lake City. The airport is right off I-84 on the Vista exit. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

View of Downtown from I-84 Broadway Exit Overpass by atufft Truck Drivers and RV enthusiasts might like to know that the TA truck stop is at the Broadway overpass, and so has good access to downtown via either Broadway or Federal Blvds. I walked this distance into town and guess that it may be two to three miles total. Also, there is an older and less well maintained Flying J truck stop on Federal Blvd at the same freeway exit. This truck stop is better located, but services are much poorer. The image here shows the view of downtown from the freeway overpass... Leave a Comment

Cooper's Hawk by JetlagCity This is a great place to see magnificent peregrine falcons, eagles, and other birds of prey up close. My most vivid memory is of a giant harpy eagle – that bird was downright scary and very impressive, with talons about 5 inches long! Idaho has one of the densest populations of nesting raptors on the planet, so it’s fitting that this facility is located here. The center breeds endangered birds to be introduced into the wild (they’ve been quite successful with this), gives presentations with live birds, and has educational displays on conservation and incubation. The Peregrine Fund, a non-profit conservation group, has its headquarters here. It’s not a big place, but what’s here is worth seeing. Entrance fee is $4. One thing still on my to-do list is to take a boat trip along the Snake River, through the Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, which is 485,000-acres. I did not think to take pictures when I was here. This picture of a Cooper's Hawk is by my Boise area friend, Michael Wiegand - a great photographer! goofballs at The Idaho Shakespeare Festival by JetlagCity If you’re here in the summer check out one of the plays put on by the Idaho Shakespeare Festival in their outdoor theatre. It’s great to watch Shakespeare under a sky full of stars with a bottle of wine and a picnic. I saw my first production of Romeo and Juliet here and it was great! When I lived here the theatre was just a bowl carved out of the ground and people brought blankets to sit on the grass, but they’ve since built a nicer theatre, with seats. It’s still outdoors, right next to the Boise River. They usually put on two Shakespeare plays and two other plays each summer. Tickets are around $30. June through September. Leave a Comment

my Anne Siems painting by JetlagCity I was always impressed with the exhibits the Boise Art Museum got, considering the small size of this town, and I still am, even after having moved to Seattle. I’ve seen famous artists’ work here several times (a Goya exhibit comes to mind), as well as that of some great contemporary artists, like Anne Siems, Robert Rauschenberg, and William Morris. Each fall the museum also sponsors Art in the Park, a great fair with all kinds of interesting artwork for sale, in Julia Davis Park, where the art museum is located. Leave a Comment

Bogus Basin ski run by JetlagCity The greatest thing about Bogus Basin is that it’s a short 45-minute drive from Boise, up a winding road into the mountains. Bogus has 7 chairlifts for downhill skiing and snowboarding, over 35 km. of cross-country ski trails, and a tubing hill. Skiing is popular in Boise – it’s the thing to do in winter here. It’s also a great way to escape the “inversions” that Boise is subject to in the winter, when the valley gets cold under gray skies but the ski resort is in the sun up in the mountains. Lessons are always available as are ski rentals. I actually worked here one winter during college, selling lift tickets and season passes. It beat waiting on tables : ) Call 208-342-2100 for the snow report! Leave a Comment
