The entrance to the Old Mission actually travels along the old Mullan Highway that was the first road cut through the Bitteroot Mountains and Silver Valley. Mullan and his crew camped near the mission during their work. Today, portions of this are part of the Union Railroad right of way that was repatriated to the Coeur d'Alenes Tribe and subsequently converted into a 72 mile fully paved bicycle trail. There's also a 18.5 mile loop that starts and ends near Cataldo, which uses some motorway pavement.

Follow a trail to the west of the mission building, down a hill into rather unkept brush and you will find hidden away a small cemetary. The number of bodies buried here remains uncertain, but it is clear that at least a few graves are provided flowers from time to time. These burials are generally more recent than in the Old Mission cemetary so why this graveyard exists separate from the other is a bit of a mystery, unless, of course, those buried here were not Catholic.
