For thousands of years the only way to cross the Snake River and this gorge was by boat or trying to wade or swim across (both very dangerous). In 1919 a suspension bridge was built here at a cost of $100,000. The bridge is 900 feet long and is over 400 feet over the water below. There is a nice view of the replacement bridge (from 1966) at the viewpoint. Sometimes there are local Indians here selling jewelry and other native crafts.
