The Heart of the Monster is a large mound or rock, I could not tell what kind of geologic formation it was but if i had to guess i'd say it was an igneous intrusion or fin which has been erroded into a mound. The structure isn't all that amazing but the meaning for the local peoples makes the location interesting. If you are on US 12 it is a nice place to get out of the car and stretch your legs.

Here is the legendary place of creation for the Nee-Me’-Poo or the Nez Perce as they are called today. According to legend, Coyote fought the monster to save the animals of the world. Coyote eventually slew the monster and then threw parts of him to different portions of the Pacific Northwest. Wherever pieces of the monster fell, a tribe came forth into the present world. The Nez Perce came from the heart of the monster that lies here.

Favorite thing: You should really go on a float trip from kamiah down to the tunnel by raft or innertube...

Fondest memory: I miss the familiarity of the place...I remember an old timer once told me that everyone leaves Kamiah but that they all come back some day...
