Most people miss most of Idaho. My favorite area's are the Sawtooth Mountains, Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness and the Hell's Canyon Wilderness.
Plan on using a pack team or float trip from some deep wilderness adventures.
With a 4 wheel drive vehicle and maps from the local ranger station, you can plan wonderful off road adventures.

Balanced Rock is in the Guiness Book of World Records. It is one of the most amazing wonders in this world. Now this is some serious physics! It's amazing that such a huge rock can be sitting on top of a small rock! We used to go here and spray paint our names in the rock. There was a canyon on each side of balanced rock, with natural hot springs pools. We used to skinny dip and go fishing. We also used to go canoeing too.. You could climb up to the very top of the rock where it is flat, and have a pic nic on top. Back behing the rock is where the caves and stuff is. There's a place called Devil's Kitchen. It's got old ancient writings on the wall and things like that. The rock is located in the desert as you can see. There is nothing but farm land, and mountains around. It is pretty dry. This area was used for big bon fire parties, bunnie bopping, motorcycle riding, and all other kinds of country stuff. It would definately surprise you what us country bumpkins came up with to keep ourselves enetertained!

Roosevelt Lake is a small lake which was created by a mudslide in the 1850s (I think). SCUBA diving in the lake is very interesting because several cabins and a small tavern were flooded when the natural blockage occurred. The rooftops floated off most of the buildings. In the tavern you can still see many furnishings including tables, chairs, and a Piano.

Most people only see the southern part of the state as the interstate runs through it and therefor miss the majesty of our mountains. Mccall and Stanley are in the heart of Idaho with pristine Lakes, beautiful parks and lots to see and do for the whole family. Stanley is 45 miles from Sun Valley which is a skiers paradise in winter and a golfer and hikers paradise in summer. Mccall is 100 miles north of Boise and overlooks Payette lake with great fishing, water skiing and hiking. Mccall also has 3 good golf courses in a mountain setting.
The picture below is of my daughter in front of 100 Acre Wood Bed n Breakfast in North Fork, Idaho. About 25 miles north of Salmon right along the River of No Return.
Ah!! When 100 dinners shall inflate thy belly and 40 winters shall besiege thy brow digging deep trenches in thy beautys field I know where my beauty lies. This fair child shall sum my count and prove succesion thine.

Most of the state is off the beaten path. Go in any direction and you will find new discoveries of incredible beauty. Most of the northern part of the state is where you will find the Rocky Mountains and forests. In the south you will find fertile farms and fields and peculiar rock formations with vast open spaces. The picture is of a little known and travel river/area called the Owyhee. This a most excellent river for white water trips. Two things to pay attention to: 1) watch out for rattlesnakes (no joke) and scout the Widow Maker rapid (single or not, this drop can get pretty ugly) It is in the south western part of the state.
