    Kayaking the Payette River

by basstbn Written Feb 6, 2010

Let me right up front about this - my wife and I are not involved in adventurous sports of any kind, so I am not reporting as a participant. However, one of the unexpected pleasures of our June, 2008 road trip vacation was the opportunity to watch kayakers on the north fork of the Payette River, which ran parallel to the highway we were on for several miles. Talking to a couple of experienced kayakers, we learned this to be one of the best white water rivers for kayaking in the northwest, and that we were there at peak time in one of the best years in memory. They informed us that the stretch of river we were seeing was rated 3 to 4, except one area (photo attached) that was rated 5. Most of the kayakers put in just below that spot on this day.

Whether you are a sportsperson or just a sightseer, the drive along the Payette River Scenic Byway is extremely pleasant, and if kayakers are present, all the more enjoyable.

    Skiing...duh

by MrJAG Written Jul 21, 2007

If you're going to Sun Valley chances are you're going there for some skiing. All day tickets are running around $70 (2007). The mountain is very steep and I've heard from locals that plenty of people get dizzy once they get up top and look down. Because it's always so sunny in Sun Valley there are plenty of snow makers on the mountain that will spray man made snow to keep the "powder" fresh. There is no night skiing, which kind of surprised me, and the town is definitely focused on skiers...not snowboarders. I don't even know if they have a snowboarding terrain park.

There are two mountains (one small and then the main one). Sorry I forget their names, but just ask around and since the town is so small it's probably a 15min drive between the two.

Equipment: Plenty of rental places in town if you don't want to lug your skis into Sun Valley. Of course the small plans that land in this town are pretty much full of skis so you won't be alone if you bring yours on the trip.
