Some claim that this is the world's longest main street. I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate, but I do know that it is the longest in Illinois. It is officially 9.2 miles long . It is your typical small town street, lined with schools, churches, and pubs. The downtown area is especially nice. Plenty to do. Just start driving until you find something that catches your eye.
One of the few remaining Drive-In movie theaters, SkyView is one of my favorite things in Belleville. For only $8 a person, you can enjoy 2 newly released films. When we were broke in Highschool, we used to sneak people in in the trunk; but have gotten a little old for that. You can also bring in your own food and coolers. This is a great place for a date or to hang out with friends. For anyone who has not experienced a Drive-In movie, I strongly recommend that you go.
Eckert's “pick-your-own” orchards feature different fruits and vegetables each season. Picking your own pumpkin just before Halloween can be a great family experience. Also, the country store makes some great homemade apple cider.
Each year at Christmas, the Shrine features The Way of Lights, with thousands of light sculptures, decorations, and other special Holiday attractions. There is a manger with farm animals and camel rides for the kids. They also have a huge LEGO exhibit which is quite impressive. Its a great way to put yourself in the Christmas spirit. The Way of Lights is open from mid-November to early January.
This beautiful national shrine is a great place for quite prayer and reflection. The perfectly manicured landscape is doted with interesting monuments, such as the Millenium Spire and the Eternal Flame. The Grotto, a replica of Lourdes, is a great place to enjoy and outdoor Easter mass. They have a very nice hotel there if you are coming from out of town. And the resturant serves a great brunch on Sundays. If you are religious or spiritual, this is the perfect place to visit.
