Carthage is located in West Central Illinois not far from the borders with Iowa and Missouri. Carthage has a population of slightly over 3000 and is the county seat of Hancock County. The courthouse was completed in 1908 and is one of the most beautiful ones in the state. When I visited, they were renovating the tower. Abraham Lincoln served as a lawyer for a few cases here, including a murder case he lost involving the only man known to be legally hanged in Hancock County.
