Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): "cast" free from load-bearing masonry
  • Tip Rating:
  • Again the facade of the Carson Pirie Scott department store. The invention of an architecture using steel frames anchored in concrete piers freed the "skin" of the building for this kind of cast metal detail.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Look at the details!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The standard picture of the Chicago Board of Trade is taken looking south on LaSalle St. This is from a slightly different view:)

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Water Tower Pumping Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located across Michigan Avenue from the Water Tower, the Pumping Stations dates from the same year (1869). Today it houses a tourist bureau.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Check out the Cultural Center...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Check out the Cultural Center of Chicago too. It is in the old Chicago Library Building on Michigan Avenue. Wander all around - the mosaic tile work and the two glass domes are beautiful. Rotating exhibits are always intriguing. I once happened to arrive at the beginning of a wonderful piano recital. It's become one of my first stops and it's never crowded.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Courthouse-26th and California
    Cook County Courthouse - Chicago

After taking the shot of the old courthouse on Friday downtown at the corner of Dearborn and Hubbard, we just happened by the courthouse that replaced it at 26th and California today on the Boulevard Lakefront Tour so I took a pic. This isn't in the best of neighborhoods although there are quite a few police around since it's right down the street from the Cook County Correctional facility (that would be a prison).

There isn't any reason for a tourist to head down this way although locals may find themselves down here if they are called for jury duty. Oprah Winfrey was surprised recently when she was required to serve jury duty here-two thoughts crossed my mind. 1) if Oprah can't get out of jury duty, what chance does anyone else have? and 2) if Oprah was on my jury, I'd be calling for a mistrial.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Smurfit-Stone Building isn't known by its name

Another architectural landmark, the Smurfit-Stone building is one of those structures that no one will remember its name, but everyone knows the diamond-shaped roof.

On Michigan between Randolph and Lake, it faces Millennium Park's north end.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Ugly Buildings

  • Anyone can find good-looking buildings in Chicago. Just look around. They're all over the place. After all, this is, in many opinions, the architectural capital of America. But what about the ugly buildings? There are some oddballs right downtown that look as if they've been abandoned, or as if they've burnt down altogether. The investors out there ought to think about buying and redeveloping that property.

Mike1457 writes: "This is actually an architecturally significant older building that lends character to the area. It's an old warehouse from a different era." There's a significant more general point behind this: the ugly stuff is probably historic, so watch closely.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Kent House
Built in 1883, the Burnham and Root designed mansion is one of the few remaining mansions on South Michigan Avenue. It was built for Sidney A. Kent, a founder of the Chicago Union Stock Yard Company.

Located at 2944 S. Michigan Avenue, this is not a particularly nice section of Chicago although it was at one time. Nearby are public housing projects so be very careful if you head down into this neighborhood.

Architecture & Public Art (outdoor): Marquette Building
Chicago is one of the best cities in the U.S. for historic and interesting architecture. In the Loop/Downtown area one can pretty much do a self-guided tour by looking at building exteriors and selecting certain ones to explore further by entering. We did just that while conducting our own public art walking tour in the Loop and ended up attracted by the beautiful facade of the Marquette Building. Named for a 17th century French explorer, Jacques Marquette, the building was designed by Holabird and Roche and ws completed in 1895. We were mainly attracted by the bronze revolving doors and the metal relief above them depicting early American exploration.

The lobby is equally impressive with bronze heads of Native Americans, explorers, and animals on the first and second floors, visible from the ground floorthrough the open interior lobby courtyard. Around the second floor landing are brilliant Tiffany mosaics that show additional scenes of early exploration of North America. There's a security guard in the lobby who can answer questions and will provide a pamphlet describing the history of the building upon request.

Located at 140 S. Dearborn Street
