Cafe Gellato serves ice cream the way the Italians make it--exactley like the Italians make it. This place serves coffee and sandwiches, too.

The triple-threat in the inner Chicago suburb of Lyons is a deli-liquor-store-restaurant catering to the Serbian and other Balkan communities in the western suburbs. . The wine includes some great stuff from Croatia, Macedonia and Montenegro -- the deli has all sorts of delicious pastries and home-made sausage.
Zupa serves all the usual suspects -- including specialities from other parts of the former Yugoslavia, including "grill" and shopska salata! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: 7919 Ogden Ave, Lyons, ILPhone: (708)442-7812

"Fresh squeezed" here goes beyond orange here to include pineapple, banana, and kiwi. Open for breakfast and lunch, this place specializes in delicious and inexpensive "brunch" style food that satisfies your hunger without doing harm to your pocketbook. Good mimosas. These two restaurant/bar/nightspots are next to each other on Chicago Ave west of the "mag mile" . Red Line looks particularly interesting as it has an eastern european flavor to its menu. Both are interesting, funky places to mispend an evening ;) Leave a Comment Theme: OtherComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: on Chicago Ave near FranklinDirections: Red Line, 228 W. We chose MK for our anniversary celebration and it was superb! Here we are with our dessert. I included this picture so you could see our balcony table! . The dessert was the candy bar -- a milk chocolate and caramel mousse bombe with a salted cashew caramel center, coffee cream :)))) Leave a Comment Theme: Eclectic/International

We finally put our finger on it -- MK is very much like a French bistro -- excellent raw ingredients, classically prepared with a contemporary twist. The service is professional, but far from snooty. All in all an excellent experience
On the top is my salmon -- described on the menu as "grilled over hardwood charcoal with chinese mustard glaze, bok choy, shiitake mushrooms and a ginger soy vinaigrette" . My soup was lobster bisque -- the broth was poured around the small pile of lobster in the center. Complex and delicious: "scented with cognac, leeks, carrots, parsley and tarragon" Leave a Comment

This is one of my favorites for comfort food, and in my top 10 for Chicago! Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Wishbone is one of the best American/soul/southern food places in town. I like it because it tends to be prepared more on the healthier side for this type of cuisine, but you really should not count calories when you eat here either. Go very hungry and leave with you belt a few notches looser. Everything is seasoned perfectly. Crawfish, catfish, chicken, grits, eggs benedict, pancakes, sausages.....and the best corn muffins.....whatever you order, it is both traditional and new....I don't know how to explain this. It is like eating food that is bad for you, but you can feel good about it. There are a couple of Wishbone restaurants, but the cooks at the one on Washington Street are hands-down the best. Crowd is diverse; service is friendly and knowledgeable, very cozy....even if you're dining alone. Watch out for the weekend crowds.
Crawfish cakes, collard greens, coleslaw, mac & cheese. Can you get more down home? Except, I like German beers to wash this down. The cakes are just seasoned so well and the cooling white sauce is just like a nice thin sheet served under the cakes....gives it a nice contrast without drowning the cakes in sauce. The collard greens might be better than you're grandmothers....so if you take her there be prepared to lie and say otherwise. Most people I know like this place for breakfast, but I say if you come for breakfast, come back later for dinner.....it's that good. Leave a Comment

Johnny Rockets was first opened in 1986 on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Their motto is to be the place where people can "escape today's complicated world and experience the food, fun and friendliness reminiscent of feel-good Americana." I think that they go out of their way to make that happen. They always say "Hello" and "Goodbye" verbally and with a smile (no matter how busy they are.) They keep the store quite clean (even when they are busy). They dance on the half-hour, offer nickels for the jukebox, twirl straws, and they place the ketchup in a paper container in the shape of a smile face (even when they are busy). The whole place reminds me of the 1950's with five-cent tabletop jukeboxes that play tunes from the fifties and sixties. The decor is authentic and includes giant photos of women in uniform from the Second World War. All-in-all, we enjoyed sitting at the counter where we could see the employees working efficiently and diligently to make the whole process run smoothly. It's a busy place that requires workers who are patient, friendly, and hard working. For us, it was an enjoyable experience from yesteryear.
I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich made with American Cheese and Sour Dough Bread, grilled to perfection with the cheese oozing out the sides. To accompany it, I ordered a Coke with Vanilla added...awe, great. To finish it off, I had an old-fashioned Hot Fudge Sundae with REAL Whipped Cream. They give a side of more Hot Fudge. Yummy. Allan had their famous hamburger with mushrooms and a Vanilla Malt topped with the real whipped cream. They give you the metal container with the extra (like the good old days!) Both of us agreed that it was delicious. That's saying a good deal for me because I seldom ever eat fast food. What a wonderful way to spend an evening! This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! After hearing raves about this place I had to try it myself and I am hooked. The flavors are exceptional. This hip place fills up fast but it's well worth the wait. I have yet to be disappointed by the cuisine. And the service is great. The waiter remembered us months after the first time we dined with him. Definitely on the top of my list of favorite places to eat. Rumor has it the brunch is great, too. *Update 05/04* They expanded about a year ago and this has cut down on the wait time considerably. The service is not quite what it used to be. It's on the slow side - but what is lacks in service it makes up for in cuisine tenfold. Don't let the mediocre service scare you off. The food is still exceptional and so worth the wait!
The cuisine is Cuban-Mexican infusion. Everything is amazing. I have not had a bad meal here yet! You have to try the Papas Rellenas appetizer. Trust me. My favorite old standby has to be either the Cuban Style Chicken or the Blackened Duck. The first time I ate there I tried the Cuban Style Chicken. It was one of the most amazing things I have ever tasted!! The sauce is a burst of flavor on your tongue. It's an incredible dining experience.
