by londonlover This is one of the area's biggest Old Navy stores, that bastion of American pop fashion. I never find much there, but I know a lot of tourists would like to see it. This one is on State Street, adjacent to Marshall Fields.

by shrimp56 I am one of those who hasn't been back since the changeover -- we shall see how long memories are -- but they may have misjudged when they rebranded the State St. Queen. --------------------- This is THE Chicago department store -- no longer owned locally and overshadowed on the high end by Nordstrom and Bloomindale's, it still is the grand dowager of Chicago shopping. . The picture is of the atrium at Christmas time. Leave a Comment Theme: Department StoreAddress: State & Washington Sts.

food by travelwithmely This place is a must for Chocolate lovers.... Their chocolates are made from excotic ingredients. They are just to beautiful to be eaten, but when you do, you are in heaven. If you have a chance, go to their website to see what I am trying to describe to you. Enjoy!!!!
Well, it is hard to say, but I would go with their special of the month.
Well, it is pretty expensive, but you will not regret it. I believe it is almost $2.00 for one little piece of Chocolate. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: 520 N. This tip is for Chicago VTers, not for visitors. Perfect for all your European language needs, you can buy books and magazines, videos and more, all in the major languages of Europe. They also have a selection of travel books in English, children's games and other curios. Thyey wil have a language dictionary for almost any European language no matter how small. Catalan anyone?
Books and magazines primarily in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian, with smaller sections for other languages. Especially helpful for the VT member are the tutorials and self-teaching aids. Things like flashcards and phrasebooks, reference dictionaries and software.

by shrimp56 This is the Crate & Barrel "flagship" store, combining both housewares and furniture. C&B is very popular with young Chicago [as well as around the country]. The design is fresh. The quality is good. And the prices are reasonable. . The picture is looking up the open atrium around the entrance/escalator area. The brightly colored material is indicative of the store's style.
I've bought everything from a big pieces of furniture to a package of 6 candles here -- it's a great source of well-priced, but stylish tableware & household goods. . Their "basics" collection has some really attractively designed items for small prices.
Anywhere for a couple of dollars to a couple thousand of dollars;) Leave a Comment

June 5-14, 2009, Bargain weekend June 13-14, 2009, every book 50 cents on Sunday! Every year in June, Little City (formerly run by Brandeis University) sponsors a used book sale held in the parking lot of Old Orchard mall in Skokie, organizers estimate that there are 400,000+ books for sale this year. I always come home with a sack of books so I started bringing a back pack and canvas bag to make it easier to cart them around. The really serious shoppers sit in line in their lawn chairs waiting to get in, grab one of the shopping carts and sprint to whatever section they want to deplete, the guy in front of me today spent $80 which at 50 cents a book is 160 books!!!! If you need to grab a bite before or after shopping, there are several decent chain restaurants at the mall including Maggiano's (Italian), Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen. The book sale was virtually the same in 2007 when Little City took over, Brandeis organizers threw in the towel after 48 years of putting it on because they simply couldn't find enough volunteers to work it.
Bargain weekend or bargain days is usually the last two days of the sale when everything goes for 50 cents Leave a Comment Theme: BooksDirections: Parking lot, Old Orchard Mall, Skokie, IllinoisWebsite: www.littlecity.org

by Robinski9 The Magnificent Mile is aptly named. You can get anything you want there...for a price. If you want bargains, hit Filene's Basement. If you want luxury, try Ferragamo, Gucci, or Burberry.
What's not to buy? There are tons of great restaurants. Oooh...go to Vosges Chocolate in the North Bridge Building (Nordstroms). The chocolate is out of this world! Leave a Comment Theme: Department Store

I've headed to the Armitage and Halsted area several times to shop, the area is made up mostly of independent boutique type stores carrying bath and beauty products, women's clothes and gift shops. The first time I headed here to pick up Christmas presents when Lush, the natural bath and beauty product store that originated in London, FINALLY opened a branch in Chicago at 859 W. Armitage (there are now several others in various Macy's) and the second time to buy my Paul Frank obsessed niece a birthday present at the Paul Frank store at 851 W. Armitage. Other stores we popped into include a branch of Hanig's shoes that specializes in Birkenstocks (the store on the Mag Mile is much bigger) on Armitage and Blue Mercury, a high end cosmetics store, at 2208 N. Halsted, Kiehl's on Armitage and Ethel's Chocolates on Armitage If you are in the mood for breakfast or lunch, you can try Toast at 746 W. Webster but expect to wait especially if it is a weekend or if you are looking for a spot to have dinner you can try Cafe Ba Ba Reeba at 2024 N. Halsted. Otherwise there are surprisingly few choices for places to eat right nearby although it looks like Boston Blackie's, a burger place, and Carson's, a rib joint, are opening locations on Halsted in the near future and I saw a few other places on Halsted just south of Armitage. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Take the brown line (Ravenswood) to the Armitage stop and head east on Armitage

Powell's Bookstore in Hyde Park, Chicago by Jefie Powell's Bookstore started out in 1970 when Michael Powell, a University of Chicago graduate student, borrowed $3,000 to open up his first bookstore. Two months later, Powell had repaid his loan and over the years, the little business has expanded to include two more locations in Chicago. I went to the one located in the Hyde Park area, close to the University of Chicago campus. It is described as the most scholarly of the three stores, and I thought there was a great selection of classic and contemporary literature. Within 15 minutes I already had my arms full of books and had to make some really tough decisions to make sure my suitcase would hold it all. In the end I narrowed it down to three novels, which I got for $5 each. Next time I need to bring an extra suitcase!
Most novels were in good condition and seemed to go for about a third of the original price. Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: 1501 East 57th StreetPhone: 773-955-7780Directions: Hyde Park area (South Side)Website: http://www.powellschicago.com Other Contact: oc@powellschicago.com
