Huge wine and liquor warehouse. A great place to find a gift! Shop for wines, beer, and spirits of all types here! There is also a gourmet section of over 250 cheeses, fine olive oils and meats. There are frequent tastings here, too!
The staff here is very helpful and informed, so ask questions to find what you're looking for. The last time I was here, there was a tasting of the "Jonesy" port from Australia. It had a great taste and was a fabulous deal. I bought some and had it signed by Jonesy himself!

If I lived in Chicago I'd shop here. Not only can you get fun gourmet groceries and a meal but if you drop something (I didn't do it - swear!), they're really nice about it! Leave a Comment

So this one is probably for the Europeans who can never believe how cheap all those brands we pay ten times the price for in Europe are over here. Gurnee Mills is a huge place North of the city (like proper rental car type North!!) which has over 200 or 300 stores likes Banana Republic, Gap etc etc all with loads of bargains. Be warned taking a female partner prone to bargains is dangerous.
Clothes, electronic goods, hunting equiptment (seriously who goes hunting with a handgun???) Theme: Discount StoreAddress: Gurnee Mills, GurneeDirections: Travel north on Highway 94 - takes about 45mins - 1hour to get there at the weekendWebsite: http://www.gurneemillsmall.com

Mitsuwa is a giant supermarket that sells everything Japanese! Go there to find whatever you're missing that you can only find in Japan, and I'm sure they've got it! If you've never been to Japan, here's a first step to see how it will be like. Everything is in Japanese, but most items have an extra label printed in English here, which you won't find in Japan! There is also a small liquor store, a bakery and a huge restaurant/cafeteria area where you can eat authentic Japanese foods for a decent price! You can also see the plastic food entrees before you order them!
My favorite is going through the sweets aisle to look for different candies... I also like looking at all of the different snack chips... drinks... etc.! I like trying new things, so I spend a lot of time in each aisle. The Japanese udon / ramen noodles I bought were the best I've ever had, and the restaurant is great!
Cheaper than Japan, so live it up! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherAddress: 100 E. Algonquin Rd., Arlington Heights, ILPhone: (847) 956-6699Directions: Open 365 days a year from 9am - 8pm. Powell's Bookstore started out in 1970 when Michael Powell, a University of Chicago graduate student, borrowed $3,000 to open up his first bookstore. Two months later, Powell had repaid his loan and over the years, the little business has expanded to include two more locations in Chicago. I went to the one located in the Hyde Park area, close to the University of Chicago campus. It is described as the most scholarly of the three stores, and I thought there was a great selection of classic and contemporary literature. Within 15 minutes I already had my arms full of books and had to make some really tough decisions to make sure my suitcase would hold it all. In the end I narrowed it down to three novels, which I got for $5 each. Next time I need to bring an extra suitcase!
Most novels were in good condition and seemed to go for about a third of the original price. Leave a Comment Theme: BooksAddress: 1501 East 57th StreetPhone: 773-955-7780Directions: Hyde Park area (South Side)Website: http://www.powellschicago.com Other Contact: oc@powellschicago.com

Devon Avenue is the "Little India" section of Chicago, filled with Indian restaurants, sweet shops, stores selling exotic jewelry and beautiful saris. We only spent about a 1/2 hour walking around because we didn't have much time, next time we will walk a little further than we did and check out some more of the shops and stop for some Indian food.
We visited on November 6th, the area around Devon was getting ready for the Indian holiday of Diwali or Deepawali (Festival of Lights) on November 12. We stopped by a sweet shop called Sukhadia's Sweets at 2559 W. Devon that was very crowded, we were the only non Indians in the place. We asked some of the folks waiting in line what we should try and they were very nice to try and help us, but even after eating it I'm still not sure what most of it is. One I know that we tried was jalebi, spirals of fried chickpea batter in sweet syrup. it had a very interesting flavor, almost like eating fried honey. Two hours after breakfast at Lou's, I'm still full. I have been walking for two hours in the bitter cold and I'm down Michigan Avenue outside Loyola University. I spy people drinking coffee on the first floor of a store 'Borders' a book and music store. If you just want to rest the legs and relax over coffee, this is ideal.
Also has an excellent choice of books and music.
Medium cafe freeze with chocolate, $3.49, delish. Leave a Comment Theme: MusicAddress: 830 N Michigan AvenuePhone: 312 573 0564Directions: Next to the Water TowerWebsite: www.bordersstores.com
