FOOTBALL - Chicago Bears at Soldier Field: SOLDIER FIELD STADIUM
  • Tip Rating:
  • Home of the Chicago Bears Football team and Chicago Fire Soccer team. Also U2, the Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews and other bands also have played there.
SOLDIER FIELD STADIUM was updated and some people say it now looks like a UFO or a Flying Saucer. I must admit, it is kind of funny looking.

  • I used to be a huge fan of watching American football, our high school had a great team, I watched in college EVEN when they went 0-11, and the 1985 Chicago Bears generated huge excitement with a team full of personalities like William "The Refrigerator" Perry and the "punky QB" Jim McMahon and a cheesy music video called "The Super Bowl Shuffle" recorded BEFORE they creamed New England 46-10 in the Super Bowl (championship game).

Well, time passes and I've become what's known as a fair weather football fan, I follow the scores, I brag when we win but I don't actually start watching the games until the playoffs. The 2006 Bears didn't have the magic of the 1985 Bears or Mike "Grabowski" Ditka leading the team but they made it to the Super Bowl. The first 14 seconds saw the first opening kickoff returned for a touch down but it was all downhill after that, the Colts beat the Bears 29-17. Well, Chicago fans are used to saying "there's always next year"!

The Bears play their home games at Soldier Field, once a majestic stadium on the lakefront honoring the soldiers who fought in wars but after renovations it looks like a giant toilet seat. Landmark status was rightfully ripped from the stadium in 2006. The stadium is outdoors which gives the Bears a home field advantage over teams in warmer climates especially during the playoffs which are held in January.

    Fun facts:
-When the Bears first started playing in Chicago back in the 1920s, they played at Wrigley Field, the home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which is how the Bears got their name.
-The orange and blue uniforms came from George "Papa Bear" Halas' alma mater, the University of Illinois.
-The nickname "Monsters of the Midway" originally referred to the football team of the University of Chicago, the campus of which is near the Midway Plaisance named during the 1893 Columbian Exposition.

Tickets to Bears games are expensive, ranging from $60-$340 for a single game so you might want to catch the game on TV should you have any interest.

The Chicago Bears football team plays at the new Soldier Field.

Originally built in the 1920's, Soldier Field is a monument to the times and great sports palaces typical of the "Golden Age of Sports" and is one of few such stadiums still standing. Plans for the stadium began in 1919, when Holibird and Roche won an architectural competition to build the stadium as a memorial to American soldiers who died in wars.

Soldier Field was built as an U-shaped stadium. The north end was closed off with the addition of the Chicago Park District's headquarters in 1939. The stadium's Classical Revival style utilizes the Greek Doric order, even though the building and its architectural detail are of reinforced concrete. The most distinctive feature of Soldier Field is the pair of systole colonnades perched along the parallel east and west sides. Each colonnade, flanked by tetrastyle temples, is formed by a double row of 32 columns.

With nearly two years of renovations completed in September 2003, the revamped stadium debuted in the 2003-2004 NFL season. Capacity has actually been reduced, but numerous modern amenities have been added, such as sky suites and many more concessions and restrooms throughout. Unfortunately, a lot of Chicagoans are not happy with the new Soldier Field- referring to the new structure as an eyesore and something from outer space.

Despite the renovations, unless you are in a corporate suite a Bears game can chill you to the bone. I would wear lots of layers and bring a blanket.

FOOTBALL - Chicago Bears at Soldier Field: GO BEARS!!!
I have been a Bears fan since I was about 5. One of my first songs I learned was the Super Bowl Shuffle (not saying alot about my taste in music). My first visit to Chicago the Bears were undefeated- the went on to lose the day after I left. My next visit to Chicago was just before they played the Colts in Super Bowl XLI- and we all know how that turned out. I will no longer visit Chicago before any important games- yes I'm a superstitous person.

Really, Soldier Field is awesome, a tribute to our fallen Soldiers- the Field was recently remodeled and looks like a spaceship- but overall you'll never find a better grop of fans than Chicago Bears fans- they care so much about the teams success and are the most knowledgable fans I've ever met. If you're in town on gameday, make a point to get tickets and watch "DaBears"

Payton. Halas. Ditka. Luckman. Sayers. Butkus. Singletary. Dent. Piccolo. Grange. Nagurski. These are some of the names that are synonymous with the Chicago Bears.

One of the charter members of the American Professional Football Association (later becoming the NFL), the Bears were formed on September 17, 1920, as the Decatur Staleys and later moved to Chicago to become the Bears. They played in Wrigley Field until 1971 when they moved to their present home at Soldier Field.

Soldier Field recently underwent a major renovation and I was fortunate to visit it a few times, both for soccer and a preseason Bears game. It is spectacular and I would not pass up a chance to see it. For anyone who remembers the old Soldier Field, its totally different. From the outside it may look like a spaceship landed on the stadium, but on the inside, the concourse and the seating area have changed dramatically and this will be one of the best sporting venues in the country for years to come.

The Chicago Bears are the heartbeat of the city. When the Bears are a winning team (which has been rare in recent years), nothing can beat the excitement and electricity in the city. Chicago is behind the team 100%. There are no divisions like there are in baseball between the Cubs and Sox.

Do yourself a favor and refrain from wearing anything green or gold. Those are the colors of the our archrival, the Green Bay Packers. It is the oldest and most heated rivalry in the NFL. We hate everything about each other and it is not a friendly rivalry at all. My personal opinions of Green Bay fans and Brett Favre are inappropriate for this website. Bears fans are accustomed to losing, and I think its safe to say we don't care if we go 2-14 - as long as we beat the Packers it is considered a successful year.

Tickets are usually only available through scalpers or friends. Try Ticketmaster for any tickets that might become available a week or two before a game. They sell out quickly. Expect to pay through the nose for good seats.
