    Buckingham Fountain
This is really a spectacular sight. One of the largest fountains in the world, and double the size of its model, Bassin de Latone in Versailles. There are hourly shows that last 20 minutes, where water is sprayed 150 feet up into the air. The central fountain is supposed to represent Lake Michigan, and the animals that sprout water are the surrounding states. At night there is a light, music, and water show which runs from dusk to 11pm every hour.

When visiting Chicago you have to see the 'Buckingham Fountain' in Grant Park.

In the intro of the TV-program 'Married with Children', this fountain is filmed.
If the TV-program 'Married With Children' wasn't shown here in Sweden I probably wouldn't notice this magnificant fountain at all when visiting Chicago. But I have seen Al, Peg, Bud and Kelly Bundy plenty of times on TV, so therefore I couldn't miss it!

    Come during Taste of Chicago,...

Come during Taste of Chicago, this year (2000) from June 30 through July 9. Over 70 restaurants sell samples of their food in a huge gathering that fills all of Grant Park on the lakefront. In the 10-day period, more than 3 million people will visit (3.76 in 1999). Fireworks over Lake Michigan on July 3rd, accompanied by the Chicago Chamber Orchestra (part of the CSO) live. Music almost every night, from country to Rock to R&B to alternative -- James Brown, Poi Dog Pondering, Joan Jett, misc., etc. This year the list includes Randy Travis, Travis Tritt, Patti LaBelle, Michael McDonald, Kansas & Yes, Cracker and more.
It makes Mardi Gras look like a frat party. There's plenty to do/eat, and it's well patrolled; there is seldom any problems, and when there are small conflicts the police -- both in uniform & out -- are right there. People come from everywhere -- suburbs 50 miles away -- to this event. This is perhaps the best, more definitive example of WHAT Chicago is.

You get a great view of the city from the fountain

by gover Written Sep 18, 2009

We sat by the fountain during the Taste of Chicago to enjoy the views (and our cheesecake!)
Only disappointment that during "The Taste" they shut the lights off the fountain at 9:00 pm.

I'm just loading pictures and place holders until I can get back and add some text. Come back in November and see what's been added.

The Buckingham fountain is really amazingly beautiful under the blue sky. I made a wish there, but it hasn't come true by now. But it's not harmful to try.

Buckingham Fountain is one of the nation's most famous fountains, a public icon of Chicago and the center piece of Grant Park. Try to rent a bike to wander around the park.

This fountain is a great experience to see, especially on a warm summer day. This fountain is famous, it has been in many shows and movies. At night it lights up into different colors.

...is Buckingham Fountain, all aglow on a summer night. Every few minutes, the colors of the lighting will change, and a huge spurt of water will shoot towards the sky. Just beautiful!

Buckingham Fountain is located in Grants Park and is one of the world's largest fountain. It was given to the city as a gift from the widow of Clarence Buckingham in 1927.
