The first elevated train in Chicago was opened in 1888. The separate lines were unified in 1911-13. The rumble of the "L" train overhead is part of the Chicago experience for sure!

The Elevated railway, know as the El or L, is unique to Chicago, with a network covering most of the city and an unique view from the trains.
Just a little tip, on the El do not forget to take your ticket from the machine at the entrance! Public transport is run by CTA
