    Chicago weather

Chicago weather is unpredictable, I've seen days with 40 degree temperature changes in the course of an hour, days that start out sunny and end up rainy, snow as early as October and as late as May, thunderclouds that look like you'll need to build an ark one minute and sunshine the next.

So come prepared with clothes for a wide range of weather and check a weather forecast in the morning before you head out.

Winter in Chicago can be brutal, the coldest day I've seen was 20 below zero, with the wind chill it was 40 below!!! But on the bright side there are many fine Chicago museums and attractions that are indo ors, it's just getting there that will be cold.

Summer in Chicago can be equally bad if you are not accustomed to humid weather which makes it seem hotter than the actual temperature not to mention making you sweat! Temperatures ocassionally rise past 100F in July or August, get yourself down to the Lakefront on those days!

    Watch for falling objects

In the wintertime, the skyscrapers in Chicago can accumulate large chunks of ice which occasionally become projectiles. If there are signs saying "Watch for Falling Ice" (or even if there aren't), try not to walk right next to the building.

Although I'm sure there are hundreds of cases of people been hit and injured by falling ice, in 1994 someone was killed by a chunk of ice falling off one of the buildings on Michigan Avenue.

    Chicago Snow

The weather is by far the biggest drawback to living in Chicago. The wind and the bitter cold make it almost unbearable at times. This is what I came home to this January after being in Los Angeles and enjoying 90 degree sunshine over New Years. Honestly, the bad weather is one of the only negative things about Chicago. If you are visiting Chicago in the wintertime please layer your clothing. Don't forget to bring hats, scarves, gloves and a big warm coat. And unless you're here in July and August it's always a good idea to bring a jacket and an umbrella along just in case. We have diverse weather conditions and the weather can change at a moment's notice.

This is the Chicago mantra -- Chicago weather is very much like the girl in the rhyme: "When she was good she was very very good and when she was bad she was horrid."
    .
Yes it snows. Yes it rains. Yes it gets cold. Yest it gets hot and humid. BUT ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS WAIT:) Because we're on a lake and change is normal!
    .
The fog in this picture of Water Tower & the Hancock Center was taken on a mid-June day.

The view from Sears Tower on a snowy day

Especially during wintertime the weather in Chicago can get really nasty. Winter storms from Canada and the Great Lakes (so-called Lake Effect Snow) might bring really heavy snowfall and far-below zero temperatures. Make sure to bring some warm clothes. On such a winter day tourists might have a hard time if they want to visit some of Chicago's numerous attractions. Imagine standing on Sears Tower's sky deck and not seeing anything because the skyscraper is completely surrounded by thick clouds... That's what's happened to me...

    Lake Michigan, Chicago Weather

    Chicago and Lake Michigan

The weather can get wild here in Chicago. Since the city is located right by Lake Michigan, there can be some unique, localized weather caused by the lake. That includes lake effect snow, big temperature variations between the city and the suburbs, and other problems such as wind and fog. Yes, it is a windy city here (the nickname wasn't wrong), so the windchills can be pretty low during the winter. Dress warmly!

We just could not let the fine weather we experienced during our recent trip to Chicago fooled us. We were here before and remembered well how hard it was to be in Chicago when there was snowstorm. Great care has be taken when driving.

Winter! I was there one New Year's. I can't even describe how cold it was. Let's just say I had on thermal underwear, pants, a turtleneck, a sweater, 2 pair of socks, a heavy ankle length wool coat, 2 scarves and a hat, and I was freezing!

In chicago it's really cold in the winter time and really hot during the summer so I think the best time of the year to visit must be Spring or Fall, personally I love it more during the fall with al those trees with big leaves af all coulours,red,orange,brownish...
But you ought to see it during the winter, the lake and the river frozen, it's incredible! Even cars ride over the iced lake! And it's the time of the year when you can understand why it's called the windy city.
During the summer it's amazing, you have beaches around the lake,it's really cool!

    Caution

Chicago in December is pretty cold. When l was downtown, l saw lots of these signs to be careful of fallen ice. It is pretty hard to walk and watch for falling ice.
