The Cherry Pit: Nice spot for breakfast
Dabs profile photo
Dabs 3952 reviews

The spot where the Cherry Pit now resides was the home of Harry's, a greasy spoon that was out of place in Deerfield.

The Cherry Pit is a great place to have breakfast, not only is the food good but the owner and staff are extraordinarly welcoming and seem to know all of their clientele on a personal level. Kids and adults alike adore Kevin, the waiter, who knows everyone and makes everyone feel at home. The walls are covered with pictures dedicated to Kevin drawn by the kiddy clientele.

My dad is a regular here and I join him occasionally when I can get out of bed early enough for breakfast.

Favorite Dish: I usually order crunchy french toast, delicious and very filling. Another of my favorites is a ham and cheese omelet with a side of buttered sour dough bread. Dad usually gets one of their huge skillets and takes 1/2 of it home with him.

The menu also features lunch items, only once did I try the Pit for lunch and it was pretty tasty too.

The Cherry Pit, Deerfield

The Cherry Pit is a wonderful place to go for breakfast. Adults & kids will both love this place! It looks like an old fashioned diner but many of the offerings are modern, such as Crab Eggs Benedict - Yum!

If you're lucky, your waiter will be "Kevin", a local actor. He is most engaging and quick on his feet so be prepared for a little fun repartee!

A great day trip would consist of breakfast here, and then on your way back to the city stop in at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Deerfield Bakery: Excellent pastries

Back in the day when I could still eat donuts and not gain weight, I used to work next door to this bakery (Deerfield State Bank, now a US Bank branch) and we would get their awesome pecan rolls, cream filled chocolate donuts and many other tempting pastries. My dad tried to put one of the cream filled donuts through the drive up teller window, I still smile when I think about what that poor donut looked like when it was done :-)

They also make awesome cakes, one of the best I ever had was for my bridal shower, a white cake with whipped cream frosting and layers of bananas and strawberries. Yum!

Tony's Subs: Don't judge a book by it's cover

Tony's Subs

I grew up on Tony's Subs, it moved from it's original location on Deerfield Road to its present home on Waukegan Road, close to the high school.

I took a friend here once and she skeptically looked at the outside of this joint, it's decor hardly fits in with the rest of this wealthy suburb. After assuring her that she would not be facing death from food poisoning, we went in and had a sub.

Favorite Dish: I've always been a Mixed cold cuts fan, they renamed it many years ago to Mixed American. They start with a good crusty bread, add generous amounts of meat, cheese, onions, tomato, pickle and lettuce topped with oil and Italian seasonings.

My husband is a Launcher fan, I think it has a different kind of cheese on it.

And it's been awhile but I used to love their barbecue beef.

You can get a half or whole sandwich, whole sandwich run about $5.

Transportation

Metra

Deerfield is well served by Metra's Milwaukee District North line, it takes 45 minutes to an hour to get to downtown Chicago's Union Station depending on if you get an express train or a milk run, one that makes all the stops.

The pie house

This recent addition to Deerfield's housing stock has been nicknamed the pie house because it is shaped like a wedge of pie. Although it's hard to tell from the photo, the east side of the house measures 3 feet at the start.

Amazingly the builders are asking $325,000 for this house!

Deerfield has recently put restrictions on how big a home can be but they forgot to put restrictions on how small a home can be.
