Great Art in Unexpected Places

While visiting the Northwestern Hospital in Evanston, I was impressed with the art displayed there.
I especially was quite fond of a large sculpture in the foyer of the Women's Section of the Hospital.
As you see in the photo, it's a sculpture of a young mother in a dress who is holding her baby aloft and probably preparing to "twirl" around. It is quite appropriate for its location outside the Labor and Delivery Section of the Hospital.
The sculpture is called Mother and Child by Barry Johnston.
This art piece is atop a base that is a fountain with soothing water calmly rolling into a basin. The room has quite a high ceiling with skylights so the sculpture looks great both in the sunlight and with artificial lighting directed on it.

A Landmark at Northwestern University in Evanston
A tour of Northwestern University is not complete without checking out The Rock.
This isn't just any rock, it's a landmark rock that has been a symbol at Northwestern University for over 100 years! The tradition of painting the rock started as a prank but soon became accepted as a means of expression. In the 1960's, painting The Rock was a means of protest. Today, it is used for all kinds of messages which change daily.
The Rock is located near University Hall; surprisingly, there is a web cam that has been installed in University Hall for the purpose of "keeping tabs" on the activity surrounding The Rock. The image is refreshed every 5 seconds for 5 minutes. It is difficult to see at night, and sometimes in the day, the sun reflects off the rock which gives a distorted view.
Nevertheless, I find it so funny that this ordinary rock has become such a "celebrity" on the campus of Northwestern University!
The photo was taken Saturday, October 9, 2004, when we were on our VT tour. I think the most comical statement on The Rock on that day was the yellow print on the right side that says, "Who is your Daddy?"
The Rock is affectionately called The Magic Rock by the university students.
