    Northwestern University Wildcats

Since my husband's father is a graduate of Northwestern University, we have been fans of their sport's teams for quite awhile. For awhile, we had season tickets to the Football Games. We have also gone to the Basketball Games when they play Indiana.

Northwestern is a charter member of the Big Ten and the only private school in the conference. The Wildcats are a Division 1 team. The university has often found itself at the bottom of the Big 10 (they are more interested in academics), but there have been a few years when they did excel.

They are called The Wildcats, and their Mascot is Willie the Wildcat (since the 1940s).

Northwestern has 19 intercollegiate athletic teams; 8 men's teams and 11 women's teams.
The weekend that we had our VT meeting in Evanston, a football game was played against Indiana, and NORTHWESTERN WON.

If you have an opportunity, take in one of the sporting events at Northwestern University.

Equipment: If it is an outdoor activity, dress appropriately.
Bring your "School Spirit" and join the crowd in backing the team.

    Embarkation point: Ecology Center

The Evanston Ecology Center and Ladd Arboretum is a coalition dedicated to promoting conservation in the North Shore. They maintain the extensive green parkway along the North Branch of the Chicago River. This area is easily accessible from all parts of Evanston and provides paths for jogging and biking.

In spring and fall naturalists from the Ecology Center offer basic instruction in canoeing and guide canoe tours of the North Shore Channel, pointing out the flora and fauna of the region.

Experienced canoe and kayak boaters can launch their own equipment farther downriver, at the Skokie Channelside Park (Oakton, 1/2 block east of McCormick Blvd. 847-414-5883).

    Blooming Great Wall of China

See classic monuments of the world while playing a round of mini golf at TRAVELER'S QUEST ADVENTURE GOLF. The Great Wall of China stands between the Eiffel Tower and a replica of a Greek Temple. See the Sphinx or Lady Liberty upclose and personal. Just outside of Evanston, the Skokie Sports Park offers all this, and a driving range, too.

  • Northwestern Football

by grkboiler Updated Oct 31, 2004

Northwestern football has a long history of losing, but they still play an exciting brand of football in the Big 10. Occasionally, they will pull off a big upset at home, and in recent years they have been contending for a spot in a bowl game. Northwestern's mascot is the Wildcat.

Games are played at Ryan Field. It is a small but very nice venue to watch football. The stadium rarely sells out, so tickets are widely available on gameday. Tickets range from $15 (south endzone) and $40 (sideline). Even without a full stadium, the fans are loyal and into every game.

Equipment: Wear purple and black - the official colors of Northwestern.
