    Galena Trolley Tours

by deecat Updated Jun 12, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are two trolley services in Galena. We took the Galena Trolley Tours. They are convenient, and I had taken this same tour once before about four years ago. It does not matter how many times you take the tour because you always have a different tour guide with a different "slant" on the sites.

We took the one-hour nonstop tour that goes every half an hour. Our tour guide was a retired school teacher [the same as Jill and I], and being a history teacher, he was excellent.

He pointed out that 85 percent of Galen's architectural treasures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. He also talked about the importance of mining to the region and how it's profits helped to build the 19th century homes.

We saw such homes as Queen Anne, Italianate [a favorite of mine], Vernacular, Second Empire, Greek Revival, and Gothic Revival! Jill and I especially like the elevated mansions on Prospect Street.

Fee for one-hour tour is $13.00 and $6.00 for Children under 12

    There is also a 2-hour tour that includes U.S. Grant Home/Linmar Gardens, but it only leaves at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. It cost: $28.00 adults; $12.00 Children under 12.

This is a wonderful way to capture an overview of this historic town.

    Walk Main Street

Take your time walking along Main Street. If you're tired of shopping, just look around at the buildings. You'll see nearly a dozen styles. Details will begin to show up as you relax and look up. There are differences in windows, cornices, the dentile (may be spelled wrong, as I just learned about them), roof lines, and many other details. Some buildings have a shadow of a previous neighbor building on them. Buildings on other streets can be seen over the roof tops, especially the steeples. Look for the High School! It's up on the ridge top.

Just enjoy the art of the architecture you're surrounded with.
