The building where Sweet Susie's is located was originally a department store, and it used to be 3 stories high
While revisitng Grayslake, I decided to try the "new to me" place called Sweet Susie's. It was the second time I had been in the shop. The last time, I ordered an ice cream drink. It was quite delicious (even though quite filled with calories). This time I wanted to check out the rest of the menu.
I noticed immediately how clean this shop is. It is spotless and well maintained. In addition, I love the open, airy feel about it. I found the people who work here to be ever so helpful, friendly, and quite efficient.
Since I love cheese, I decided to try the Say Cheese sandwich. I wish I had read more carefully. I don't like "spreads" on my sandwiches so I needed to ask that it not be added. Also, I would have wanted my cheese sandwich to be grilled so the cheese was melting. I should never assume; rather, I was at fault and needed to read more carefully. The sandwich, nevertheless, was quite good. It had provolone, cheddar, American cheese, a specail spread, sliced tomatoes on sourdough bread. In addition, a side of watermelon came with it. I could have had other choices, but I love fruit. Also, a nice addition was a chocolate-covered pretzel!
Favorite Dish: The menu is quite extensive and includes deli sandwiches, soup, quiche, salads, French pastries, cakes, gourmet chocolates, coffee, tea, Smoothies, and some ice cream drinks.
Here's a sampling of some of the choices:
Just for Joe (Rueben) with sliced corn beef layered with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, thousand island dressing, and served toasted on dark rye for $5.95.
The Gobbler..sliced oven roasted turkey on sourbough bread that is topped with cheddar and provolone cheese, mixed greens, purple onion, tomato, oil & vinegar, spicy mustard and mayo for $5.95.
Cheeseburger Sub...a hamburger patty served on a toasted French roll, topped with American cheese, mixed greens, onions, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and mayo for $5.95.
All-in-all, I counted 14 different sandwich choices.
The Quiche is served with a side of salsa or sour cream.
They offered 6 different salads, and you could have a side salad with a small bowl of homemade soup.
The day that I was there, the soups of the day were "Spicey Chicken" and Cheese Broccoli".
There are too many sweets to mention, and they have a bakery on-site, which insures freshness.
Of course, they specialize in coffee drinks and gourmet teas, but you can order tea or soft drinks also.
So, if you are hungry while visiting Grayslake, stop in at Sweet Susie's whose says, Everything's Sweeter at Susie's!"

Opened in 2003, Grinders Cafe & Eatery has become a popular place in Grayslake. This is a cafe and eatery that serves both coffees by the cup, or they will sell these flavorful coffees by the pound. They also sell teas.
In addition, they serve sandwiches, soups, salads, chocolates, and other bakery treats. They do a big business in "Carry-out business", and they also do a good deal of Catering.
The owner, Dale Dohm, remains steadfast in her belief that a cafe does more than serve food; it provides "genuine service...always friendly, always dependable"
Grinders offers plenty for the SWEET TOOTH. I noticed muffins, cake, cookies, biscotti, scones, donuts, brownies, pie, and cinnamon rolls.
I also noticed that you are able to choose how to make your sandwiches: What bread/bagels, what cheese, what meats, what veggies, and what condiments. You are also able to order 1/2 sandwiches.
Also on the menu are Focaccia Pizzas, Pita Pockets, and Grilled Pannini Sandwiches.
In addition, they offer all kinds of soups and salads.
But my favorite offering is their Chocolates. They can be purchased by the box or individually.
Favorite Dish: What I enjoy the most at Grinders is the Coffee Bar Menu! They have Cafe Au Lait, Hot Chocolate, Steamers, Java Boosters, and Chai Teas.
Furthermore, they offer Espresso, Americano, Macchiato, Cappuccino, Lattes in all flavors and combinations.
Also, they have Iced "Kreations". Plus, my favorites, their Blended Cappuccinos that are called Frosticcino Freezes, which are cappuccino blended in such flavors as Caramel, Vanilla, or Chocolate!
If that were not enough, they have Smoothies and Breezies!! Yum and Yum again!
I was certainly pleased to see that they carry Italian Soda and Italian Cream Soda and all kinds of Lemonades.

3. Is it a "chain" or family owned
4. How good is the service
5. How friendly is it
6. Is it smoke free or does it at least have a non-smoking area

Washington Square is relatively new; it is located on Washington Street across from the College of Lake County. For a strip mall situation, Washington Square is quite good looking, and, in my opinion, has several good places to eat.
The most popular place in Washington Square appears to be Somethings Brewing, Inc, which is a combination Gourmet Coffee Shoppe, a bakery, a Deli, and Confectionery, and a Gift Shop. They make Candy trays, gift baskets, and handmade confections. I noticed this time when I was there that they have a new Low Carb Menu.

Favorite Dish: Kaleidoscoops Ice Cream & More is a large ice cream store found in Washington Square. It has two rooms. One is the main store, and the smaller room is for parties (especially for children).
It reminded me very much of 31 Flavours. They had some delicious sounding ice creams, ice cream cakes and pies.
It's a very clean and well kept store, and Rick Zook, Owner is quite personable.

Wine Knows is a very attractive and large wine store in Washington Square. The owner, Philip Grenier, is quite well versed in all kinds of wines. He has organized the store very well by country and/or type of wine. There are all sorts of items concerning wine that are also for sale. It's a great place to purchase those rare wines, and he is able to order wines for you if he does not have it.
