Another shop which attracted my attention when I was walking around the historic downtown section of %Lake Bluff is called Peachy. Speaking of unique! This store is something I have never seen before. It advertises itself as a store for custom stationery and accessories. Everything in the store was handmade [it seemed right at the store]. Initials, and names were embroidered on items of clothing and hats. There seemed to be lots of belts, also.

The colors are quite bright with lots of pinks and greens and yellows.

When I looked up this store on its website, it indicated that there was also a sister store in Northbrook Court

They sell apparel, bags, belts, Hats, Watches

They also sell handmade: Birth announcements, Gift Stickers and Enclosure Cards, Holiday Cards, Invitations, Letter Notes, Flat Note Cards, and Folded Note Cards.

This, I feel, is definitely a store for women and children. It has a real "Preppy" feel to it.

What to buy: I listed all the items that could be purchased here. I was interested in the Children's handmade hair bows.

They are located a 38 East Center Avenue in Lake Bluff, Illinois 60044

The store is open: Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
    They are closed on Sundays.

What to pay: Once again, because everything is handmade, items are expensive.

    Village Market: An Old Tradition

    Village Market
    1 more image

Note: The Grinder which is a meat and seafood market is in the back at the side of the "Village Market", and my friend from Lake Bluff raves about it. {See second photo].

Since 1888, it's been a tradition in Lake Bluff to visit the "Village Market". Only six people have owned this store at this same location for these 119 years!

Adolph Rosenthal built the store, and in 1902, his son-in-law, Charles Helming, took it over and managed it for 45 years! Then Bill & Marlene Hanson ran the Village Market for 26 years, & then they sold it to Marv Hackbath. He ran the store for 18 years before selling it to Augie Aviza in 1991.

But, in 205 Augie Aviza sold to a local family [Sue and Rob Douglass]. People in Lake Bluff had been very worried when Augie but the store up for sale. Some thought a developer would buy it and tear it down. Fortunately, that did not happen.

The Douglass family renovated it and, thank goodness, kept the "flavor of Village Market" by keeping it a "general store"! Thus, people are still able to buy their morning cup of coffee and a newspaper on their way to the train station; they still are able to buy groceries; kids still come into the store to get their candy,;and some people merely drop buy to catch up on the village gossip!

The only time in all these years that The Village Market closed was when Sue and Rob did their extensive renovation in the winter of 2006. Now, it looks better than ever, but it has maintained it's "hometown" appeal.

What to buy: The Village Market Lake Bluff offers food items, speciality gourmet items, newspapers, produce, candy, sodas, cigarettes, "meals to go", and even wine, beer, and cheeses!

Alo, on Saturdays, they have wine tasting

    Open:
    Monday through Friday: 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
    Saturday: 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
    Sunday: 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. except in the WINTER: Sunday 8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

It truly is a "General Store"....it truly is Lake Bluff's real "treasure".

What to pay: You sometimes pay a little more, but it's worth it for the ambience and the service.

Peg Ann Kompany: Unique Handmade Jewelry & Gifts

As I was walking down Scranton Avenue in Lake Bluff, I noticed some merchandise out on the sidewalk [a sidewalk sale so to speak] in front of a shop called Peg Ann Kompany. This shop was certainly not there when I lived in Lake Bluff. Instead, the fascinating and wonderful White's Variety Store [kind of a Dime Store]

Note the third photograph which was in front of this store. It refers to White's! So, I walked into this beautiful store. There I met "Peg" and realized that she was once a school secretary next to where my husband taught math at the Junior High School. [It's a small world!]

This is truly a "unique store with one of a kind HANDMADE JEWELRY AND GIFTS. The store itself is arranged quite well. Merchandise is displayed beautifully.

What to buy: Peg Ann Kompany is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. When I did some research to find out exactly what was sold here, this is what I discovered:

    Selina Vaughan Jewelry
    Armilaire
    Jenny Ratcliffe artisan jewelry
    Dana Wados [local Chicago artist]
Antique Poker Chip Jewelry and Money Clips
    Lady Smith Collection
    Weener Ware

For people who know about handmade items, this is an impressive list, and it is only a partial list.
I was quite impressed with Peg Ann Kompany

What to pay: Because almost everything is handmade, the items are quite expensive.
