  • TSE: Luxury Apparel and Accessories

by sajayi Updated Jun 4, 2008

In 1989, TSE the cashmere label, was founded by Augustine Tse, supporting an idea that this luxury yarn, up to that point, had been greatly under-utilized. This beautiful raw material had been used very one-dimensionally, was very classic and expensive, and was perceived to be reserved only for the elite. The objective of the company was to incorporate this incredible material into all aspects of one’s life and make it more accessible to a broader audience. It was this modern adaptation of the traditional commodity that forever changed the luxury cashmere business.

Today, TSE is both a wholesaler and a retailer with businesses that are comprised of a woven designer collection strongly supported with luxury knitwear of impeccable quality. The company stays true to its original philosophy, which is to continue to be a laboratory for ideas and innovations.

TSE's Lake Forest store sells women's clothing, contemporary women’s clothing (the tsesay collection) as well as handbags and belts. What I like most about TSE is the versatility and depth of each season's collection. TSE carries ready-to-wear knit and woven items for day and evening which come in interesting prints, designs and fabrications. Without question TSE has become a more fashion forward brand, but it stays true to its classic core by stocking basic cashmere and wool knits all year round (as well as men's items during the holiday season). Just as important as the collections themselves, I have ALWAYS found the TSE store staff to be friendly, trust-worthy and knowledgeable.

What to buy: The TSE store in Lake Forest is the place to buy luxurious cashmere and wool knits in addition to winter accessories (hats, scarves, gloves) in the Fall/Winter seasons. Their cashmere and wool winter coats, capes, blazers, dresses, skirts and pants are noteworthy. EVERYONE should own at least 1 basic crewneck, v-neck or cardigan sweater made of TSE's impeccably tailored and luxuriously soft cashmere. When the season change, TSE is also the place to purchase luxury cotton, linen and silk Resort and Spring clothing. The new TSE handbag and accessories complement their merchandise each season by adding the element of color in different cashmere, leather, and patent leather combinations.

What to pay: TSE sells luxury items at a luxury price point, but their clothing is well worth the cost. The items that I have purchased from this store have lasted for years.

Kiddles Sports: Family Owned Sporting Goods Store

by deecat Updated Oct 10, 2007

    Kiddles Sports

In 1968, Kiddles Sports [Sporting Goods and Bicycles] was established by Ron, Millie, and Jay Shlifka. It is located in historic Market Square and is one of the most well known shops in Lake Forest.

They provide local [and not so local] tems with custom designed uniforms. In addition, they do screen-printing and embroidery services for custom athletic team needs.

Because of their customized offerings, their knowledgeable service, and their friendly helpfulness, it is a real pleasure to shop with them.

My personal association has been with the purchase of bicycles and with the servicing of bicycles.

They sell juvenile, adult, Mountain, and Road Bikes. With all their experience [40 + years}, they are able to solve almost any bicycle problem.

They also have a very positive attitude about health and try to deal with "health-minded products. With Ron, Jay, Lee, and Aric Shlifa [three generations] working here, you are assured of dedication, experience, enthusiasm, and pride.

Howard Zolt has worked at Kiddles for over 30 years and is very knowledgeable about their inventory. Being a Chicago Cubs dieheart, we have much in common.

Kiddles also has "The Bike Guy", Dick Ingram. If you have a bike, any bike, he's the man to help you.

What to buy: at Kiddles of Lake Forest, you can purchase bikes, shoes, athletic equipment, uniforms, eyewear, watches, and accessories.

    Hours:

    Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
    Closed on Sundays.

What to pay: I have always though that Kiddles of Lake Forest has competitive prices.

Lake Forest Book Store Inc.: Independent Book Store

    Lake Forest Book Store Architecture

Lake Forest Book Store, Inc. is a real favorite of mine. One reason is because i love book stores, especially independent book stores. However, Lake Forest Book Store is very special. It has been open since 1949. It was in a space south of town square for 55 years.

Now, it is located across from the train station in Town Square area. This is a much more ideal location.

This is really a full service book store that truly caters to its clients. They have typed-out reviews of new books that are done by locals. In addition, they do evening book reviews, which are great fun to attend.

Lake Forest Book Store is a real community book store and is a vendor to the Lake Forest schools. I remember when I taught high school English, I would frequently go to this store to find unique and helpful research materials and items to build my curriculum.

They also do book fairs for the schools, which is a real positive feature.

What to buy: Lake Forest Book Store has an outstanding children's section. I sometimes spend an hour or more just perusing the children's books. As a grandparent, I make it my job to discover new and educational books for Sabrina Dee and now for Brandon Allan.

They are also well known for their wonderful Interior design books, their paperback fiction, and their hard to find books. They have often ordered books for me and are so efficient about calling me when the books arrive.

I cannot say enough postivie things about Lake Forest Book Store.

    Helanders: A tradition Since 1922

    Helanders Building
    1 more image

You cannot speak about Lake Forest without speaking about Helanders, Inc.. Helanders has been family owned and operated since 1922. They have specialized in fine stationery, engraved luggage tags, Neon Light Signs, Office Supplies, and Gold Stamping.
They also sell CD's of Local Lake Forest and Lake Bluff artists [which I find a nice "touch"].

The people who work here are so well versed in the merchandise and go out of their way to give wonderful service. This is their flagship store and is meant for retail business.

They also have a Helanders Hotline Office Supplies for Business Accounts. It is in a different location and has been in business since 1980. It's telepnone # is: 847-816-1660.

What to pay: They have very competitive prices, but their high quality merchandise cannot be found in other places and is, therefore, a bit more expensive.

The Toy Station: Quality is of Utmost Importance

by deecat Updated Oct 10, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    The Toy Station

When we lived in Lake Bluff [right next to Lake Forest] and our daughter Jill was a small child, we would always shop at The Toy Station for toys. Jill loved going into this store because of the wonderful and unusual items that were not available anywhere else.

This store is owned by local residents, Mary and Doug Donovan. Although they did not own it when we used to shop there, I am so glad that they purchased it and have kept it a quality shop.

It's a child's delight...when you walk into the shop, all the toys are a real "feast for the eyes".
As an adult, I love browsing there. Now that I have two grandchildren, I'm going there regularly.

What to buy: If quality toys are what you are after, this is the place to shop. They offer collectibles, dolls, Thomas the Train, Breyer Horses, Craft, and Princess, just to name a few.
This is THE PLACE TO SHOP for holiday gifts. They have a sign up for in-store events as well as a birthday gift registry and party favor/goody bags.

They also have In-Store Parties and you can choose themes. Some of the most popular with the children are:

    Breyer Horses
    Thomas the Train
    Princess

This is such a fun, upbeat place to shop and to take your children.j

What to pay: Prices are certainly more expensive than WalMart or Target; however, the quality, service, and choices are so much better as well as more educational.

The Forest Bootery: Family Owned and Operated

by deecat Updated Oct 10, 2007

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Forest Bootery

Before we moved to Lake County Illinois, we lived in DuPage County, and Allan worked in the summer at a shoe store in York Shopping Center where Allan met a man named Paul. Years later when we shopped at The Forest Bootery, Allan realized that Paul owned this shop. We would go into the shop because of that connection but also because the shop offered quality shoes, great variety, and excellent service.

Paul is now retired, but the shop is still in business. It's the perfect shop for Lake Forest because it offers quality [which cost more and cost is not a factor in Lake Forest].

This is a large store that has well displayed merchandise. The people who work here have a good knowledge of shoes, how to fit shoes, and how to take care of their customers.

What to buy: The Forest Bootery is located in Historic Market Square. For over 25 years, it has been family owned.

They carry boots, sandels, athletic shoes, coats, hats, handbags, and socks as well as shoes.
It's an excellent place to purchase children and infant shoes.

They carry high end brands such as Aster, Allen Edmonds, and Stuart Weitzman as well as other high quality brands.

Because they are experts at FIT, this is a great place to buy shoes for the entire family.

Note: There is now a Forest Bootery in Libertyville also.

What to pay: You will pay more here because they carry high quality shoes
