Things to Do

Giant Superman Statue

Giant Superman Statue, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  Fun photo op - if you are in Metropolis, chances are, this is the reason you came. A 15 foot-high, 2-ton "Man of Steel" statue. Follow the "Superman Statue" signs (yes, really) to the County Courthouse. There, in the main square behind the parking lot, you will see him.When...

For All Things Superman, Visit the Super Museum

For All Things Superman, Visit the Super Museum, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  There isn't much in Metropolis that DOESN'T revolve around Superman... The Super Museum houses the personal collection of Jim Hambrick - and is TOTALLY worth the $3 admission fee. The museum has thousands of Superman items - from lunchboxes to toys, to movie and TV props,...

Take Your Picture with Kryptonite

Take Your Picture with Kryptonite, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  The WHOLE reason you came to Metropolis is to seek out the Superman sites, right? Here is a perfect photo op - take a picture with a chunk of Kryptonite! OK, so it's really just a boulder painted green, but it is still kitschy fun. You will probably be able to come up with a...

Take in Views of the Ohio River

Take in Views of the Ohio River, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  Easy enough - find the waterfront! Metropolis has many vantage points from which to view the scenic Ohio River. I'm always fascinated by water (I AM from Southern California, after all, and spent 13 years on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans), so I could sit...

Massac Theatre - R.I.P.

Massac Theatre - R.I.P., Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  I hate to see things like this... A beautiful old-time movie palace, gone to seed. You can tell the building was lovely in its day, as the residual beauty still exists. The interior has been gutted, and the ceiling has mostly fallen in. It will probably be razed at some...

Bring your boat! Public Boat Launch

Bring your boat! Public Boat Launch, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  There is a well-maintained public boat launch just to the side of the Harrah's Casino self-parking lot. Launch will put you smack-dab into the Ohio River.

Take your picture with the Welcome Sign

Take your picture with the Welcome Sign, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  OK, I know it's cheesy, but vacation photos NEED title shots, right?? This one is SO EASY; it's on the left side of the road as you enter the town. You have to pass it anyway, so why not pull over and take a photo? This one was taken with my camera on self-timer mode on the...

Harrah's Casino Metropolis

Harrah's Casino Metropolis, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  Nice riverboat casino - and part of the Total Rewards network. Three floors of gaming - my luck was consistant on all three... Buffet was stellar. Probably should have listed this under "tourist traps", but with a casino, I think you know what you are getting into when you...

Fort Massac State Park

Fort Massac State Park, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  The historic site is a replica of the 1802 American fort that was on site. The historic fort area contains 2 barracks, 3 block houses, officer's quarters, well, stockade along with a fraise fence. Since the original site is on the National Register of Historical Places, the...

"Truth, Justice and the American Way."

"Truth, Justice and the American Way.", Metropolis

mydirtylaundry Says:  Superman is all over this place. A 15-foot Statue stands in front of the courthouse. Stop and take a picture in a Superman Cut-out, they can be found all over this city. This is a small town, and it shows with the small businesses that line the streets. I stayed just for a...

Superman Museum

Superman Museum, Metropolis

rebel256 Says:  everyone loves Superman and this museum, in its "graceland" style of being tacky yet informative, it is still the mecca for fans of the golden age of comics

Summer's Riverview Mansion: Beautiful Victorian Bed and Breakfast

Summer's Riverview Mansion: Beautiful Victorian Bed and Breakfast, Metropolis

megs_entropy Says:  This was our first stay in a Bed and Breakfast and we enjoyed it so much more than a hotel. The caretakers made us feel very cared for and at home. We stayed in the Sweet Dreams room with a beautiful white canopy bed and in room jacuzzi bath the first night. We decided to...

Willy Jak's: Maybe having an off-night

Willy Jak's: Maybe having an off-night, Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  Came here on a recommendation from a local, who said they had the best burgers and shrimp in town. The look of the place reminded me of Carlos n Charlie's and Margaritaville - and it is a bar. During dinner hours, you must be 21 to enter.I was there for lunch, and the place...

Super City Dippin' Dots: This Ice Cream is SUPER! (Sorry - it was too easy)

Super City Dippin' Dots: This Ice Cream is SUPER! (Sorry - it was too easy), Metropolis

TravellerMel Says:  The signs say this is the Planet's largest Dippin' Dots store, and they offer something like 30 flavors, including some only available at this location like "Lois Lime" and "Clark Kent's Cookies n' Cream". For those who are not familiar with Dippin' Dots, it is tiny frozen...

I popped in quickly to escape the heat, and what I found was an adorable store. Co-located with Humma's Drug, this smallish store sells Hallmark cards and gifts, and convenience drugs, toys, potions and lotions. They have an aisle dedicated to Americana - Coca-Cola, Betty Boop, Harley Davidson, and of course, Superman.

What to buy: Superman souvenirs - shirts, keychains, lunch pails...

Superman Celebration
TravellerMel profile photo
TravellerMel 640 reviews

The annual Superman Celebration occurs the second weekend of June each year, and brings thousands of people to Metropolis. Each year there are celebrity guests (2009 had Noel Neill, the original Lois Lane), games, and events. In 2008, the Guinness World record for the most people dressed as Superman was set at the Celebration. Kids will love it!

Metropolis is a small town, so if you plan to stay the whole time, you will need to book your hotel room in advance. If they are fully booked, look at staying in nearby Paducah, KY.

Buffalo Herd

I discovered these buffalo somewhere in the environs of Metropolis. I can't recall precisely where but I'm sure you could ask. Absolutely beautiful creatures.
