    Normal Trees Are Changing

    by Elena_007 Updated Mar 27, 2005

    Normal Trees

I, normally am fond of trees. They just seem to symbolize the changes in life to me.

A time for renewal ~ Spring
A time for growth ~ Summer
A time for change ~ Autumn
A time for reflection ~ Winter

My favorite (favourite) time of year is Autumn. Normal trees are changing, as you can see from the photograph. I think they are really beautiful. Normal trees are just awesome! In this ever-changing world, nothing remains the same, and change is inevitable. (A normal part of existence in our normal, everyday lives) and of course, there is always ... Beyond Normal. ;-)

    Happiness or Maybe Smileytown, USA

    Happiness?

Somewhere near Normal is what looks like it could be Happiness, judging from their smiley town water tower. I really have no idea what the actual name of this town is, as I only came close to Normal, and couldn't identify with the Normal crowd. Still, we exchanged smiles, and I moved on. :-)

Town of Normal, A Normal Town

    by Elena_007 Updated Mar 27, 2005

    Town of Normal

Situated on the way from Memphis to Chicago, where I was traveling to visit my sister who lives in a tiny town near Chicago, is Normal, Illinois. I almost cried, laughing so hard, when I noticed this water tower as we were driving on Highway 51. A Normal American town full of Normal people with Normal jobs and Normal lives. I always thought I would like to meet a Normal person, for once in my life. Maybe, next time. ;-)

    An Extraordinarily Spectacular Normal Sunset

    by Elena_007 Updated Mar 27, 2005

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    An Extraordinary Normal Sunset

Normally, a Normal sunset ends a normal day in Normal, Illinois. Normally, sunset photographs are not taken from a moving vehicle traveling at 70 MPH. Considering all things Normal, I believe this is the most extraordinarily spectacular Normal sunset that Normal has ever seen. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I am not sure if I will ever be anywhere near Normal again. ;-)

ISU's Academic Mall -- the Jeffersonian Dream

by yooperprof Updated Dec 12, 2003

    Ring my bell

The first American "Quad" was at Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia, and ever since then it has been traditional for many institutions of higher learning to emulate Jefferson's example. Jefferson's typically American schizophrenia is reflected in his attempt to marry urban and rural values in the university: to combine the attractions of an idealized Greek city-state (which is after all an urban space) with the rootedness and authenticity of "nature". Illinois State has a very attractive academic mall - ultimately inspired by Monticello and fulfilling Jeffersonian aspirations. But I don't think Tom would be pleased with the quality of the buildings which line the quad.

    The Education Building

by yooperprof Updated Dec 12, 2003
    mandarin palace

This fortress structure houses the HQ of the Department of Education, the core constituent of "normal" schools, the heart of the university. Alas, this building is an effective representation of what public education has come to represent: cold, heartless bureaucracy, the factory system of mass education, assembly-line testing, and preaching of new enigmatic gospels: ever hear of "No Child Left Behind"? I'm afraid the building doesn't show very much heart!

    Theatre Building

    All the world's a stage?

I guess you could call this "nouveau functionalist" architecture. Isn't it interesting that from the exterior, you might think this could just as easily be a sewage facility as a theatre? At least it has a place on the university quad.

    Drive past corporate State...

    Drive past corporate State Farm...
Bloomington-Normal's third claim to fame...It is the birth place of State Farm Insurance and it's corporate headquarters. You can't actually visit here without a reason or permission (their security is tight, too, trust me...) but it might prove worthwhile just to sort of drive by menacingly and leer at the single greatest contributor to conformity in this town.

    The David Davis Mansion

This is an old historical house belonging to some manner of politician. Which manner, I'm not exactly sure. It has been completely restored and is historically acurate. And you have to put those little booties on to walk around in it.

A visit to the Beer Nuts factory...ha ha ha (like there are any 'must sees' in B-N
That's right kiddies, not only is Bloomington-Normal the birthplace of Steak 'n Shake, it also gave the original life breath to Beer Nuts. They always have samples out in their factory shop. Yum yum...
