    Photo #1: My brother-in-law, Larry Gullet, is pictured on the RIGHT leaning against the Robinson Daily News Building where he has worked for 54 years! He retires in June, 2008.

    Photo #2: I love this photo that introduces LINCOLN TRAIL COLLEGE which is located at 11220 State High One, Robinson, Il 62454. The telephone # is (618)-544-8657.

    Photo #3: Arts Center at LINCOLN TRAIL COLLEGE.

    Photo #4: Old Oblong School [still being used] west on Route 33.

    Photo #5: My parents, Ross and Wanda Wood, grave site in the new cemetery off of East Route 33. This graveyard is across from the Super Walmart where my sister works and in front of the Robinson Marathon Refinery. My father worked for 34 years for Marathon.

    These are images that are important and I wanted to include them in my presentation of my hometown of my youth.

    Robinson Correctional Center is located on Country Club Road, but locals call it "Prison Road". This is in southeastern Illinois about one mile northeast of Robinson, Illinois.

    It was opened on January, 1991, and its official capacity is 600 inmates; however the average daily population is 1,193 [which, I guess, includes personnel?] It is classified as a Level 5 High Minimum-Security Prison for Adult Males The Robinson Correctional Center information says that the average annual cost per inmate is $18,035.00!

    There are 23 buildings at this location, which includes six housing units that each contain 10 dormitory rooms with 20 beds per room. The location also includes an academic and vocational building, a non-denominational chapel, a medical unit, a gym, a food service building, a segregation unit, a building for a commissary and laundry. Of course there is a maintenance building, and a training facility [located outside the inner perimeter].

    An administration building houses the executive, personnel, business, and record offices. Also on the compound is a control center, a mailroom, an armory, and the main gate.

    This facility provides needed employment to this area.

    Wabash Valley Wine Trail

    Pioneer Winery Palestine
    1 more image

    The Wabash Valley WineTrail includes four wineries that are within 30 miles of each other. So, the trail runs from Palestine, Illinois, to Vincennes, Indiana.

    They include:

    Windy Knoll Winery near Vincennes, Indiana (812) 726-1600

    Lasata Wines near Lawrenceville, Illinois (618) 884-1200

    White Owl Winery near Birds, Illinois (618) 928-2628 {Photo #2}

    Pioneer Winery in Palestine, Illinois (618) 586-2921

    The furthest one away from Robinson would be the Windy Knoll Winery, Vincennes, Indiana [about 30 miles]; the closest one to Robinson would be the Pioneer Winery in Palestine, Illinois [about 7 miles]. {Photo #1}

    The one I know the most about is WOW! [White Owl Winery]
    This winery opened in 2000 and the idea for it came from a home wine-making kit that was a Christmas gift! Today, W.O.W. is the 4th largest winery in Illinois; they can produce 50,000 gallons of wine per year.

    They offer complimentary wine tastings and tours of the winery. They also have what is called "Murder Mystery Dinners in December, January, February, March, and April.

    They are open year round Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday & Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday from Noon until 6 p.m. [all Central Standard Time]

    They carry such wines as fruit wines [Persimmon, Cherry, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Rhubarb], traditional wines such as Merlot, Chardonnay, Seyval, Vidal, & Chenin Blanc. In addition, they offer "Holiday Sparkle" Champagne. Their brochure indicates that they have at least 12 different wines available at all times.

    This is a great tour to take if you enjoy wine.

    Fairview Drive-In

    The Fairview Screen
    4 more images

    As I was driving toward Robinson on Friday, May 16, 2008, I was astounded when I saw that the Fairview Drive-In was still open for business. It opened in 1953, and I have personally attended movies there. The sight of the still operational Drive-In brought back many memories.

    This particular drive-in has been remodeled twice since 1953. One time it had to be remodeled because its original screen was blown over in a strong wind storm.

    By about the 1980's, most Drive-Ins were closed down. The Fairview Drive-in is "one of only 12 remaining Drive-In Theaters in Illinois".

    While taking photographs, I did notice that there are no speakers on the poles that mark the parking lanes. Instead, as noted in photograph #5, patrons are asked to tune to 88.5 FM on their radios.

    The photograph #4 indicates that Adults pay $5.00; children between 3-12 pay $3.00; and children under 3 get in free.

    The theater is open Thursdays through Sundays from April 1 through September 30.

    You just can't miss this unique theater located on Rout 33 East of Newton, Illinois.
