Metra

by traveldave

When I lived in the Chicago area, I commuted to downtown Chicago on Metra, a commuter rail system that serves the six-county metropolitan area of northeastern Illinois, which is made up of Cook, Du Page, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. Metra began operation in 1984, and since then has become the second-busiest commuter rail service in the United States, carrying almost 83,000,000 passengers per year. It operates 11 commuter rail lines, totaling 511 miles (822 kilometers), that provide service to 241 outlying stations in over 100 communities.

Mississippi Bridges

by grandmaR

Under constructionOne of the problems with approaching Illinois from the west is the Mississippi River. You must cross it to get to Illinois. It is still possible to cross the old fashioned way (by ferry). There is a ferry crossing just north of Ste. Genevieve that people use as a shortcut. But if you don't want to use the ferry, you have to use a bridge. There are multiple bridges in St. Louis. And there is also a bridge in Cape Girardeau. But they were a good hour's travel north or south of where we were in Farmington. So we used the bridge at Chester (photo 3)

Land of Lincoln

Each state has a different license plate, and people traveling through the country may be interested in how they differ from each other. The design in Illinois was decided by votes of more than 230,000 Illinoisans who voted for their favorite license plate design in the summer of 1999. In Illinois, when you register your car for the first time, you are issued two standard license plates. The registration for standard plates costs $78 per year to renew for cars and trucks weighing 8,000 pounds or less. There are specialty plates of course. There are environmental plates, plates commemorating colleges and fraternal organizations, Route 66, sports such as hunting and fishing, and various charitable organizations. It is interesting that there is a distinctive plate for organ donors - it is a dark color in contrast with the standard plants and most of the specialty plates.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66

by Stephen-KarenConn

Perhaps the most legendary of all highways in the United States is U.S. Route 66, which ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California. The highway doesn't exist any more and cannot be found on modern maps, having been replaced by modern interstate highways. However, many travelers with a taste for nostalgia and adventure still retrace the old path along two-lane roads. It takes a little detective work to follow the old route. It made a diagonal southwestward cut across Illiniois from Chicago to East St. Louis, passing through Gardner, Springfield, Bloomington, and many other towns and cities. Much of the old route is marked with brown and white Historic Route 66 signs such as the one pictured here. The website below is a great source for learning where to locate the historic highway. Many books are also available on Route 66.
