As IN 49, the By-pass has been around, more and more stores, shops and restaurants have moved out to that side of town. In 1990, you would drive right by town on IN 49 and never know it was there, and miss the store and restaurants. Today, you can't get through without noticing as there are three traffic lights and shopping area springing up at each one.
Unless you're in a hurry, don't rush through. The unique part is off the by-pass. Take Indian Boundary Road west into town and then follow Calumet south into town. If you're headed south, Calumet parallels IN 49 and rejoins at the southern traffic light at County Road 900 North (St. Pauls Church).
Visit the dunes, hike the nature trails, watch the sun set over the Chicago skyline (in June) across the lake.
Fondest memory: The raw power of Lake Michigan on a stormy day; the serenity of gentle waves on a quiet day.
