Favorite thing: Covington's "Claim to Fame" is that General Lew (Lewis) Wallace grew up here. Wallace was a remarkable man who was an attorney, Indiana State Senator and a soldier in the Mexican War. He became a General for the Union Army during the War Between the States. At different times he also served as an Ambassador to Turkey and Governor of the New Mexico Territory. But the achievement for which Wallace is most remembered is that he author the classic book Ben Hur: a Tale of the Christ. Ben Hur has never been out of print and has been filmed three times. Wallace's statue is in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
