bridge over a small gully by sambarnett A Crown Point website offered this covered bridge as an example of the city's proud historical heritage. Well, not quite. The bridge was constructed in 1878 by A.M. Kennedy and Sons. In 1933 it was moved from Rush County to the Lake County Fairgrounds. History indeed. It's still a nice bridge though. Leave a Comment

grandstand by sambarnett At the corner of Court St and Greenwood sits the main gate to the Lake County Fairgrounds. Quite most of the year, it comes alive in August with the Lake County Fair. But it's nice to visit any other time for picinics, hiking, demo derbies, gun shows, etc... Inside the grounds is Fancher Lake which features swimming beach, although why anyone would want to set foot in there is beyond me. Although a small lake, local legend says it's actually over 100 feet deep in the middle and it is connection, via an underground tunnel, to Cedar Lake. I guess someone drowned in Fancher and their waterlogged corpse ended up in Cedar Lake. The connection has never been scientifically proven. The land is part of the crest of the Valparaiso Moraine, a 10,000 year old reminder of the Ice Age that marks the dividing line between the drainage systems of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. Catching a demolition derby at the old school, wooden grandstanding is something I will never forget. Leave a Comment

wpa mural by sambarnett Inside Crown Point's Post Office is a mural, painted in 1938 by George Melville Smith, depicting city father Solon Robinson welcoming newcomers to the area. It is also worth noting that the service here is some of the friendliest service you'll ever experience. The Crown Point Post Office is located at the corner of East and Joliet Streets, one block east of the Square. Leave a Comment

home by sambarnett Jeez, I'm surprised they just didn't go forward and add an "e" at the end of "old." This was Crown Point's first clapboard house, built in 1847 and owned by Wellington Clark, who owned a dairy and cheese farm. Formerly a museum, the house appears to be undergoing a slow renovation and is closed to the public. Leave a Comment Other Contact: 227 S. Court St.
