Marktown Historic District
sambarnett Says:
A planned community for employees of the Mark Manufacturing Company, Marktown was founded in 1917; the plan called for enough single family homes, duplexes and row houses to accommodate 8000 people. Although never fully realized, 100% of the original buildings...

El Ranchero Restaurant: Excellent Mexican
Dabs Says:
After asking around for the best Mexican in the area, this place was suggested and everything we tried was awesome and incredibly inexpensive. We got it as takeout.

Casa Blanca: Casa Blanca
sambarnett Says:
The neighborhood is rundown and the building is dumpy looking but the food is exquisite, the interior is pretty and the prices are reasonable. Little pricier than some of the other places in town, but still a good deal. They have a good selection of Mexican beers too.
Plaza Garibaldi: Good cheap Mexican food
Dabs Says:
East Chicago has a bunch of good Mexican restaurants, one of my favorites for take out is Plaza Garibaldi. Menu says that they are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can call in your order for faster service.
Everything I've tried here is good.
South Shore line
There is a South Shore station at US 20 and Indianapolis Avenue, a few miles north of I 80/94. A one way ticket to Chicago is $4.15. With over free 1000 parking spots, the EC station can be your best bet.

Life's been tough in the Harbor in the post-industrialization era. While their still are some nice-looking areas, things look pretty grim around the old millgate, the (former) commercial district and numerous housing projects. There have been a number of murders this year,...
Problems in EC
sambarnett Says:
EC has a disproportionally higher crime rate than most cities. Most of this revolves around gang and drug activity. I have seen open drug dealing on Kennedy Avenue. The main roads and the places I mention on this site and the casino are generally safe to visit. The biggest...
