Franklin Things to Do

  • by Mary1ndiana Updated Apr 4, 2011

The Artcraft has been purchased by Franklin Heritage,Inc. (Non-profit) They
are currently restoring the theater. "Classic Movies" are shown every other
weekend. The all volunteer staff is friendly and polite and the ticket prices
    are ridiculously low.

There is a pre-show with a skit and drawings for door prizes, there is a real
sense of small town community that you just can't get anywhere else.

The Willard Bar and Restaurant is right next door and they do have live
    entertainment on weekends.

The Artcraft Theatre is a very old building that shows old movies and occasionally caters to some local musicians. This structure along with The Willard bar and grill next door used to be a hotel. It was restored in the mid-20th century to what it is today. It's a shame the owner did away with live music at The Willard. It's the only reason many people went there.

My favorite small town diner comes from my hometown, Franklin, Indiana, and though few will travel to this city I still feel the need to express my love for the quaint place that serves chicken fried steak with white gravy.

Sitting on the main square surrounding the counties court house, Don and Dona's provides great views of the historic square and the people who pass.

You sit with up to 100 people in a not so fancy inside that brings the cities major players in after church on Sundays. Young and old know the place well as many are brought up on its foods. The young before weekend sport and the old to have coffee, a laugh, and a read of the news paper.

It's a place that I shall never forget and forever searching when I return home. It's the quintessential small town diner.

Favorite Dish: I personally like the Chicken Fried Steak.

Tom Filis has owned and operated Athens Restaurant for a very long time in Franklin. His recipes for some of the Greek dishes are outstanding. I highly recommend the spanokotiropita. It is delicious!

Favorite Dish: Believe it or not, this is the best damn fried chicken I have ever had! (and I've had a lot of fried chicken in my day) On Sundays, Tom serves up "all-you-can-eat" fried chicken. The seasoning he uses in the breading is delicious! Very juicy chicken! Bring your appetite!

There's one bar in particular downtown Franklin that seems to attract the recluses of town. It's called the New Rumors Bar & Grill. It used to be called Joker's Wild....and yes, the people here are "wild." I wouldn't recommend going in there unless you want to get into a fight or meet toothless folk.

Franklin has few off the path places, but one must look towards the Artcraft Theatre. This is under new ownership and often plays older movies. The Artcraft has been around for over a century and continues to be the hotspot of Franklin.
