If people have actually heard of French Lick, it's because of the Larry Bird connection. Larry Bird is a former Boston Celtic (that's professional basketball) who grew up in West Baden/French Lick.
He pursued the last riverboat gaming license in the state of Indiana with plans for a casino and a Larry Bird Museum but the license eventually went to Donald Trump aka The Combover. As of early 2005 Trump has backed out of building the casino and the license is back up for grabs.
Because of the silly stipulation that casinos in Indiana have to be on boats, the proposals are for the boat to be on a waterway that would be dug between the French Lick Springs Resort & Spa and the West Baden Springs Hotel.
The sign below is on the main route through town and is, of course, in the shape of a basketball.
Although the name of this town sounds rather risque, the origin of the name is actually rather dull.
The Indians originally named the area Lick Springs because of the deer and other animals that would lick the mineral deposits on the rocks left by the mineral springs. Later when the French traders came to the area to trade with the Indians, it was renamed French Lick Springs, later shortened to French Lick.
See, I told you it was rather dull!
